Runs great but: tick tick tick

I just noticed (maybe was always there) a tick tick tick--tick tick when idling in drive with brake on. It does not make this noise until the engine is warmed up. At operating temp (just below 200 degrees) when stopped and idling there is a ticking or maybe injector knock. If I put it in neutral or park it goes away. The dealer said the new trucks make quite a few strange noises and drive it. I use stanodyne at every fill up. The noise is coming from under the hood and is loudest under the wheel wells. This is not loud, but noticeable over the normal diesel chatter. The truck runs super and rides great otherwise. Still getting 15mpg in town.

Any thoughts on whether to worry or not? 7000 miles

its pretty normal, IMO



If you came from a 2nd gen, then it is way noticable

Looks like you may have a lift, if so there goes your fuel mileage, also if your tires are larger then stock then they will effect your fuel mileage as well.



Looks like you might have two strikes against fuel mileage to start with.



Lifts = less fuel mileage



Larger tires = less fuel mileage



I would bet the lift is hurting you more then the tires.

My 05 had the "nervous" tick as does my 06, I think it has something to do with the cp3. The noise is just something I'm trying to get used to now.



These engines are so quiet, you can't help but hear "strange" noises.



FWIW: I adjusted the valves on the 05 and the noise was still there.

Thanks. i came from a 2000 CC Ford 1 ton dually V10. A great truck but never saw 14mpg. I will take the 15, and I think that is good for an 06 Mega. I get 17 on the hiway. That may be as good as it gets until it breaks in. Others are complaining of getting only 13.

The noise sounds sort of like pinging in a gas motor but just one "ping" at a time with no particular rhythm.

I get the same noise in my 05 every once in a while, but a strong dose of seafoam clears it up for a few thousand miles. I think its injectors getting carboned up.

Looks like you may have a lift, if so there goes your fuel mileage, also if your tires are larger then stock then they will effect your fuel mileage as well.

I would bet the lift is hurting you more then the tires.

a 2 inch lift is not going to hurt anything, i dont think---or is it?

I agree with Rankram. I just got my rig back Wednesday from the dealership. I had them look into a few different things, and one of them was the tick tick tick you mention. I am somewhat fortunate that my hometown dealer is quite small. I frequent them for the parts that they still have for my Duster. Yeah, they actually still have some of the stuff around.



I was able to spend about 20-30 minutes with the diesel tech before I handed over the keys. At about 13,500 miles, the tick has been there before and after the one and only oil change. Did it with the oil it came with from the factory, and currently with the synthetic premium blue extreme 5w-40 that was installed for the winter. It is noticable mainly at idle when its up to operating temp. Can hear it more so in drive thru's, at the wheel well on the drivers side (pump side. coincedence? probably not). It is probably there at higher speeds, but as you may know, it kinda gets covered up with everything else. Oh yeah, my friend picked up an '05 about a month ago with 12k miles. No tick.



Long story short, the tech checked the valve lash and alot of them were too loose. He adjusted them back to spec, but it still ticks. I will say that overall, it is quite a bit quieter now. I am sure that someone out there that has this tick will eventually have some type of work performed (pump replaced, injectors, etc, but not just additive) and the sound will go away. Till then, I will probably live with it.

My 2005 started the ticking exactly as described in this thread at about 6,000 miles... I'm guessing it is injector related as a strong dose of injector cleaner got rid of it for a bit. It has started to come back again, even using fuel conditioner/cleaner with every tank. Does anyone have any other ideas besides injector carboning?

Mine ticks also. Dealer refuses to check the valves. I'm just trying to get used to until I get up the motivation to dig into it myself and check the valves. Dealer says it's injectors. WHen I brought it in they said I've got 35 percent idle time. Told me that sooted injectors was probably the cause of it. Told me to run it hard and use injector cleaner. I've been using injector cleaner forever and it still ticks. No matter how hard I run it either. I noticed it ticking a whole lot more after I had the CP3 injection pump replaced because it was leaking. I used the old broomstick handle to the ear trick to try and isolate it to the source. Put it right on the CP3 and it's definetly not coming from there. Something internally in the engine.

My truck has done that since day one and it became really noticable once I put 5" stacks on it. it wasnt until 2 weeks ago now that I broke down and set the valve lash, most of the intakes were loose but most of the exhaust were fine, my truck had around 38K on it when I readjusted the valves. After I readjusted the engine did not run smooth it was like normal maybe a tad worse but then after running it 400-500 miles or so something happened maybe the injectors seated or something but it is now running smoother than it ever has. One thing I would stress is make sure you are very knit picky when setting the clearance, close is not good enough, be exact and dont get lazy on the pain in the ***** #5 & #6 intake and exhaust valves becuase they are hard to reach. Hope this helps.

its a lean cylinder knock--its pretty common, these trucks when running right are very quiet---just a slight hum--at least thats what i seem to here, have the dealer perform a cylinder cut out test---that will tell 90 % of the story---also a relief valve test--thats the other part that can make the injector knock.

I took it to Cummins today. They said dont worry about it. First they thought it was maybe a loose flex plate bolt or exhaust noise amplfied by the afe stage 2 and the mbrp replacement muffler. I think it is injector related - but what do I know. The Cummins tech also asked if I had the oil changed recently. He said it is quite common for the dealer to put too little in, resulting in extra clatter. MY oil level was fine. Interesting analysis. Thank you for the compliment on my photo. It is up on the Kore website if you look around under leveling kits (it is a chase system though).

Idle Tick

Nelson I got a 05 and the tick started around 8 thou. miles. Started using SEAFOAM every 4th tank and the tick has not been back. Im bettin dirty injectors, dump in 2or3 cans and runner HARD GOOD LUCK

I just noticed a high pitch tick on my 05 also not sure if it is the engine or transmission. I was in the bed and I got close to the cab and I can hear it . Checked transmission fluid for the first time ( 5500 miles) and it is on the A in mAx when hot in neutral :--) . (wonders if it was filled on a friday after lunch ) after the bends. So thats what 1 1/2-2 quarts to much? Not sure if the dealer will fix or not. Not sure if thats the tick or not.

I also had a tick at idle while holding the brake on. Did some snooping around and belive it or not sometimes the simplest thing is it.



What i found was the throttle cabal was vibrating where it attaches to the fuel pedal. The throttle cabal slips through the fuel pedal.



The fix was a pice of duct tape wrapped around the attachment point of the throttle cabal to the pedal.



No more ticking at a traffic light. !!!
