My 03 is having issues.

With the Edge hooked up (on stock since it's a new motor) the engine wouldn't make enough power to get out of 3rd, and was running very rough. My egt's would climb to 1200 f. The codes were P0336 Crankshaft Position Sensor Performance, and P2146 Fuel Injector Group 1 Supply Voltage Circuit.

I unhooked the Edge and my egt's returned to normal, but the truck is still running rough, but makes power. Before the test drive I checked the codes again (after several starts) and P0500 Vehicle Speed Sensor 1 Circuit, or No Vehicle Speed Reference Signal 1, came up, but the 1st 2 were gone. After the test drive (had decent power but I could feel it bucking once in a while) the 1st 2 codes came back.

So I have 2146, 0336, and 0500 codes. Some times the truck fires right up, and others it takes a couple revolutions. If I'm just sitting there and stab the throttle it will rev up smoothly at times and others it bucks.

What the heck is going on, if I can't figure out the issues there's no way I'll take this truck out to work, as I can be up to 400km from civilization.

replace the fuel filter. Some one just recently had something similiar with his truck and a filter fixed the issues. If you were in the states it could be the ULSD but I don't know about canadian #2

check your oil and see if your truck isn't 'making' oil. If it is significantly higher than it should you probably have a cracked injector and it is washing the walls of your cylendar.

If it were me, I think I'd ignore the codes and check the basics: fuel pressure (measure pre-pump, observe spray post-pump), turbo pressure, valves, water-in-fuel, fuel lines, injectors, vacuum. If all that checked out OK, I'd grudgingly take it into a shop. Good luck!

My truck has spent 2 days in the shop. My crank sensor was replaced with a known working one (borrowed from another truck), and there was no change. The lift pump has supposedly been checked out, and is good. The wiring seems to be OK and several points have been checked (pin to the end device, and pin to ground). I took it for a drive this evening and I noticed some things.

1 Before I left the house I had it running for about 45 min, and the engine was fully warmed. The truck made no power, no smoke, and had a 1000 deg F egt, running in 3rd gear at 2200 rpm, full throttle.

2 I stopped at a friend's house, and shut the truck off for about 30 min. I jumped in, it started normally, and ran normally (all cylinders seemed to be pulling, good power, and normal egt's).

I checked the codes when I got home and they were:

P0203 Fuel Injector 3 Circuit

P0483 Cooling Fan Speed

P2146 Fuel Injector Group 1 Supply Voltage Circuit

P0336 Crankshaft Position Sensor Performance

What the heck is going on? I'm starting to think the ECM is on the way out. Is it possible to flash the ECM with it out of the truck? The reason I ask is I'm 4 hrs away from the nearest dealer, and I don't want to have to tow this truck down there, it would be much easier to ship the ECM.

In the early days of third gens there was a problem with water getting into the eng CPU connectors. THere was even a TSB (I think) on how to replace the harness with an updated part. You could try unplugging the CPU and look for H2O. You'll need to disconnect the batts first though.

Good luck,

Scotty

Since your truck is not new and it is winter time and it is throwing codes like crazy one of the first things I would do is check and make sure the batteries are still good. The grid heater takes a lot of voltage and some times the batteries don't get charged up enough while just idleing. ESpecially if the grid heater keeps cycling. My 99 will throw a Throttle position sensor code in the winter if I start it up and move it a couple of times without driving it. Easy to check before you start replacing the computer. Just a thought. :D

The connectors to the ECU are good, as they have been pulled and inspected several times.

I just put in new batteries about 2 months ago.

My forehead is getting sore from the recent wall beatings :(

check your wiring harness, sounds like wiring to me. make sure every thing is plugged in good,no abraision, ect. Have you ever lost a belt? have seen lost belts take out cranksensors. check for broken teeth on the tone wheel. Ohm test your injectors, should be between 1 & 0 Ohms. BE VERY CAREFUL TIGHTINING THE NUTS ON THE INJECTOR TERMINALS. If overtightened they will break. Also the harness should Ohm at the same specs when disconected. Sounds like a problem w/ your wire harness though.

I also figure it is a wiring problem, or the ECM. But I doubt the ecm would have intermitent problems. Thanks for the reply.

I was having issues with my 03 last spring. My problems were not the same as yours but the cause was in the connections on the ECM. The connections looked good but there was a problem in the size of the connection terminals. They changed the two connector blocks on the wiring harness. At the time I thought they were possibly off base but I have had no problems since. I was told that this problem was more common in the early 03s.

Was the datastream inspected when the truck was at the shop? Taking a movie of the PIDs on your truck and comparing it to the CKP donor truck that was running fine would probably show the problem.
