Rust colored brake dust on frnt whls???

Is rust colored brake dust normal on a '01 5spd after only 2000 miles? From 0-1800 miles I towed a 7000 lbs trailer and had 2000 in the bed after seeing the light and trading in my Ford V-10 during a cross-country trip

.

A mechanic buddy said that it could be the brake pads are shot?



Could this be the case after only 2000 miles or is it normal break in. I have had my share of Oh Sh** stops when little 3 cylinder econoboxes get in my path.

Normal. I've even got 4 wheel disks and only the fronts visibily get the dust, even though if you look closely the rear has some dust too.



Don't know why your mechanic buddy would think the pads are shot - pretty common occurance. Look at all the cars on the road with black front wheels driven by folks who never wash their cars other than at a drive-through car wash. Mercedes seems to be the worst.

Mine has done it since day one and I now have 28,000 miles on it and the pads still look great. Wait until you tow something! The right side seems to get more then the left.

Same here, my front wheels are COVERED in brake dust after a few hundred miles.

I wondered the same thing when my truck was new. Driving in a hard rain will wash most of it off.

Dust deflectors

How well do the dust deflectors work? Geno's has them and I am considering them... a bit pricey though... .

Rust colored because of the metal content of the pads and the rotor you're wearing off. Normal stuff with the load you're pulling.

Spaceace, Geno's dust deflectors (Kleen Wheels, I think they're called?) work great! Although they're slotted to direct air into the brake area, I sometimes wonder if there's enough air getting through, even with the claim of "enhanced brake cooling". Still, my front wheels stay almost totally free of brake dust, and they're quite easy to pop in and out when rotating the tires. And for 37 bucks, it seemed like a small price to pay compared to the effort required to clean the wheels.

i'm with claymike on this one. both of my fronts are loaded, but

the right is much worse than the left. thanx for the info on the geno's deflectors

Rick seems normal most braking is front 60% rear 40% car truck due to weight tranfer . Ron in Louisville KY P. S Do get a exhaust brake save service brakes your choise but get one .

Mine has done it since new, worse after towing.
