Today I removed the plastic lower dash cover below the steering column to allow some light into the underside of dash so I could see the wires better.

When I removed the two screws that attach it I noted moisture on the backside of the plastic cover where the screws are.

I has rained the last few days and truck has be outdoors in it.

I have been watching my headliner and visors for rain water or moisture so far luckily none.

I looked up to find where this water was coming from could find anywhere that it could flow down to this point.

My worst enemy to my vehicle's are corrosion as I am on the Coast.

I sure don't need rust starting in the inside of my truck!

I will use a wire brush on a dremel to clean area and I will place rustolem rust kill and paint on it. And watch the area closely in the future. Any one else every come across this OR have any suggestions

Thanks, Bill

Normal is a light colored lightrust, that is a water aggrivated rust. Is your carpet wet? If so, sometimes when you have the heater on and between that and the mositure, you can get condensation in the truck. Check close. Good luck!

Carpet was dry.

Yes I agree, Funny thing was it was wet there when I removed the panel. I looked around as a contractor (I have learned to think like water) when building a home to stop water intrusion into a home. I looked all around, really didn't see any tale tail signs of water migration to this area. My only thought is some thing was there that attracted moisture to collect at that point. Carpet was dry.

Naturally I will watch this area closely

Bill my truck is a few years older than yours, but I had the same thing way back in 02. I think it is from just the bare metal from the factory. I noticed mine when I was installing the after market painless wiring harness, but I never noticed moisture.

Rob, Come this spring I will remove that piece and paint it as Rust is my worse enemy here on the coast my trucks end up rusting out on me. Of course I keep them 20 years I want to try and stay ahead of the rust at least for the first few years.

Wasn't there a TSB about water leaks coming down the drivers side A pillar? Look at TSB 23-003-04

The 05's are know to have the clearance lights leak that could be the source of water put how it would get to the kick plate I have no idea; check your clearance lights

HOW To CHECK

How would I check? Climb a ladder and look for condensation?

If I remove the lens and it wasn't leaking it may not reseal and then it will leak in future

Bill

The light will reseal if removed. Mine would leak at the seam around the base. The seam is 1/4" up from the base all the way around. Hard to see but you can feel it with a fingernail. The seal from the light to the paint seems real good. The lights leak at the gasket for the screws also. I put rubber o rings under the screws and atv on the seams before I could get mine to stop leaking.

A friend of mine took in his 05 3500 and the Dodge dealer replaced all the overhead lights with a new seal design. I would go talk to your local dealer there might even be a TSB. Apparently it is common problem in the 05s...

Anyone have any thoughts or suggestions regarding the interior RUST?

Thanks, Bill

Painting is more difficult. Use a spray with chain oil. The rust will turn a nice shade of brown, and no more peeling/rusting ever.

A high moisture climate with a good temp swing will cause water to condense on metal that way... so don't just assume it is a leak until you verify it...

If it was a leak and it had been raining, I would have expected to see water laying there.

My 99 also did this FYI, it had no leaks and was simply condesation.

I would check your firewall. There might be a gromet that is leaking or unless you have brought something thru it it might be leaking. Just a thought.

Noticed surface rust on mine behind the cup holder about a week ago. I haven't found any leaks so I'm not going to worry about it right now.
