Rust on the frame!

I was underneath my truck today and noticed some rust forming on my frame right below the drains for the bed. I also noticed some up front where some battery acid had leaked out.

I know dodge has some kinda rust warranty, but will they cover this? Should I even be concerned?

The corrosion warranty is ten years. But according to the warranty it only covers sheet metal parts after they are rusted all the way though. Surface rust isn't covered.

So it needs to be rusted through? On my 96 the lower edge of the passender door is going to hell. There isn't a hole in it yet, but it is creeping up the outside now.

Do you think I could get this fixed for free? That would be too cool, but I don't think it will happen.

Bill- What is por 15? I take it is some kinda paint? Can I get it say @ Napa or do I have to special order it? Sounds like the way to go short of grinding down the rust and repainting the whole section.

Ryan- I bet they wouldn't fix it. , esp. where you live. Another TDR member from Canada informed about a special oil treatment that you can get applied before the start of the salt season and it helps keep the salt from starting rust. He has a gen 1 RAM that still looks brand new.

I should have read the warranty better before posting, of course there is fine print, all in DC's favor, here it is from the '95 warranty manual;

"The Corrosion Warranty covers the sheet metal parts of your truck. This warranty has two different time-and -mileage limits.

1) For ANY body sheet metal panel, the limits are 36 months, unlimited mileage.

2) For OUTER-BODY sheet metal parts, the limits are 10 years or 100,000 miles, which ever occurs first.

The corrosion warranty applies to perforation due to corrosion only. Perforation means a rust-though condition, such as an actual hole in a sheet metal panel. Cosmetic or surface corrosion (resulting from stone chips or scratches in the paint, for example) would not be repaired under this coverage. "

Por 15 is available from 4 Wheel Drive Hardware. 1-800-333-5535. They have a Chasis coat in black for $44. 99 a pint. The stuff is expensive, but I've a heard good things about it. Haven't used it myself.

My drivers side door was rusting where the door skin was folded over the door frame on the bottom edge.

Dodge replaced the door N/C under the corrosion warranty. No questions asked. Seems Dodge didn't do a very good job sealing up that seam.

POR 15 solves all the rust problems, just paint over the rusted area, and it stops it dead in its track. Yes pricey, but yet worth it, I swear by the stuff.

Consider yourself lucky - if you were driving a GM truck your entire frame and undercarriage would be rusted with 6 months to a year because they don't paint it at all. Your frame will last a LONG LONG time even covered in rust (go under any GM truck older than 2 years)!

All my family members think I'm nuts. On both my'98 and '01. 5 right after I brought them home I painted everything underneath with black Rustoleum. I think most manufacturers used the cheapest black paint they can find and just put enough on to make it look black. The front axle knuckles were bare metal, the rear driveshaft looked like it sat in the Pacific Ocean for a while before it was installed, and the transmission was good and rusty. Then after I painted it I covered the whole bottom with a undercoating material sold by J. C. Whitney (liquid asphalt). I hate to even drive it here in the winter when the roads are piled with more salt than snow #ad

Although I didn't do it right away like johnrv4, I am doing what he did a little at a time. The only difference is, I brush on the liquid asphalt first and then, after allowing the liquid asphalt to dry a day or two, paint it with black Rustoleum. The paint makes the surface dry (not sticky) to the touch and easier to work with later.

sell it maybe at car shows big ones
in shap meets dealers do have it
i get mire in reno at hot august nights
in swap area , dealers in sacramento ca
i can get name i painted a rust bottom trunk w/ hand brush at it will lay flat w/
no lines u can even lay fiborglass sheets
under the paint to cover holes
will work well on frame can be sprayed
but if not cleaned the best u ever did
the gun will be junk also buy new smaller
cans to keep amounts in if u get on rim
lid is on for good , bill

I cant't agree with you on the Rust Bucket GM comment... . This is my first Dodge, and my first Diesel... Always owned GM... I personally have seen few GM's any worse, and sometimes, quite a bit better, than truck I have now. .

Very good product, sandblast, if possible, clean well with paint prep and spray on... Can be painted.
