rust remover

I've got a couple of rusty spots on the engine block that I want to treat and paint. What is the best way to remove rust, I have heard that there are products that oxidize the rust or something like that so you don't have to do the traditional sanding etc prior to painting. Also, do I have to worry about these products removing the paint that is surrounding the rusted areas?

Andy, go to a good sporting goods store that sells guns, try some "Flitz". It comes in a tube, like tooth paste. Use it with some 000 or 0000 steel wool. I have used it on guns with rust without taking off the blueing. Its also good for taking rust off of chrome. Just follow the instructions.
