oh, I guess that explains why the exhaust system fell off and why the underside of the truck is starting to have a rust color to it... that same color seen under the carpet that was found wet for some unknown amount of time.



Does that also explain why wiring keeps being found to be green rather than copper color? Those aftermarket backup lights died from that problem...



damn, I was much happier thinking that it was just snow dust... .



Maybe someone will come up with a full body linex or other coating for us rust belt folks that is cost effective.



And I bet BPINE's truck is still showroom clean on the left coast...

Your problem isn't the road salt up there, it the roads themselves that rattle the exhaust systems off. I have a brother who has lived in Derby Line and now lives in Newport. I've driven up there in the winter time. Man your roads get serious frost heaves!

Ah, they are just up the road... .



We call it 'washboard' . That is when the road is just like a washboard.



My wife dumped the old suburban off into a ditch on it's side after hitting the washboard coated with ice.



I lost my tail pipe after hitting another washboard and bouncing sideways into a plowpacked snowbank...







DC should test the beasts up here rather than in Arizona.....

Where I live in the middle of the SALT belt, the exhaust system will live a much shorter life. It is no secret that all the major automobile compannies use products in there new vehicles that are less then on par with replacement pieces. The tires are all special runs that do not hold up as "normal" tires would, shocks,batteries and exhaust systems are all guilty of being on the "low" end of the quality spectrum. What I don't get, is that when these systems do fail, why would anyone replace it (exhaust system) with another "steel" system?? Why not go with a stainless steel product and not have to worry about that part of the truck again??

i also have a '97 Mazda protege with 149000 miles , original exhaust system has some degree of rust but not half as bad as the truck , i believe companies will use the cheapest materials when possible to save a buck... ... ... ... . when we pay that kind of money for our trucks we should not be taking it so lightly that we will be replacing parts within four years or less if thats the case then we are not getting our moneys worth ... ... ... . with my car all i have replaced is the brakes @100000 , 2 timing belts @60000/120000 , to me this car was worth every cent... ... ... .....

I have been looking at getting a 96-98 12 valve when I get the funds secured (read- get a good job and pay off lots of debt). Good to know the factory system may not be as good as the old ones- good excuse for a 4" system. I've never had a problem with aluminized pipe, but I dotn really live in the rust/ salt belt, nor do I plan to. I can think of a dozen first genners that have the original exhaust system, in excellent shape for the years- THe surface is no longer shiny like the new 03s. Some here in MO, some out west in CO, some in between; Did get one from CHicago that had a few rust spots, but was far from falling apart. Further proof that we the consumer are paying more for cheaper products.

Glad to know I'm not the only one with a rusty exhaust. Mine tail pipe fell off at the back of the muffler a couple of months ago @ 66K , only three years on the road.



A local muffler shop patched it back togehter until I can put the pennies together for a Bank Monster Exhaust.

It is, I have been under it. he uses ALOT of WD40 under there.



BTW, my stock exhaust rusted apart at the back of the muffler this summer. I intend on replacing it with 6 1" pipes that fan out in the rear for a full truck width smoke screen.
