posted April 03, 2005 11:23 PM

Poll Question:

Just to see what all our members are pulling with... Sorry there are only 5 categories available so I picked the most common... at least what I thought were the most common

Results (115 votes counted so far):

11 (10%) - Chevy Diesel P/U

40 (35%) - Dodge Diesel P/U

37 (32%) - Ford Diesel P/U

22 (19%) - 1 of the Big 3 Gas

5 (4%) - Other. . ie MDT

The poll was started by a Powerstroke driver. :-laf

Keep in mind that Chevy has not been building diesel trucks for all that long (2001?). A poll of trucks built after 2000 would most likely not look the same.

Ken,

What surprised me wasn't the Chevy result (actually, one must consider that, pre-Duramax, Chevy had the 6. 2L and 6. 5L diesels), but the Dodge versus Ford result!

Weren't they using the Detroit Diesel long before the Dumb-a-max???? Oo.

Those results kinda reflect what I noticed last weekend. We camped @ Normandy Farms up in Mass. What I saw was the overwhelming percentage of 5th wheels were being pulled by a Dodge. Only 2-3 Fords were under a 5er, and I saw no Chevy's or gassers with a 5er

I would say half the TT's were being pulled by Chevy pickups-almost all gassers. I also noticed most of these were locals.

The other half pulling TT's were several Excursions & PSD's, a few F150s, and I seemed to be the lone CTD with a TT.

Everyone else was camping in a Prevost or Marathon diesel pusher that probably cost more than some country's national debt.

But, Chevy has tried for the longest time to be in the Diesel truck market. !!

In 1978 they had a 5. 7 olds, then in a few years the 6. 2 followed by the 6. 5 then this Duramax.

I drove one before buying the 95 Cummins and again in 02.

I want Torque.

The reason I qualified the poll with this statement is that, from what I can tell, any diesel that Chevy had before the Duramax did not have any significant impact on the market.

Sadly, I must admit that i have a 97 6. 5 chevy suburban diesel. Yes they can be quite fast, have a lot of torque and do well against the stock cummins... BUT THE CHEVY WILL BE FAR FROM STOCK TO DO THIS! GM took the approach with that motor to have too high of a compression ratio and then not enought boost, and they don't even have an intercooler. The strong aftermarket engines have 18:1 and then have more boost to make good reliable power. This was done to alleviate cracking blocks from too much compression. Also, with the 94 and newer 6. 5's, the electronic fuel pumps are worse in reliability than the VP44's that dodge has. My sub has had Seven of the DS4 pumps, all under warranty. The older military Hummers use the chevy 6. 5, manual injection and they still have lots of problems. My Dodge is much more reliable, powerful, faster, etc. , etc. , etc. than my Chevy.
