I agree, I don't want to give up ANY performance. and after another day of testing the new beta SW I would still say about a 30-40 % reduction in smoke so far but still a bunch when lugged at all. (Under 1800 RPM)

I have an '07, auto, 4x4, dually with about 23,000 miles and mine smokes quite a bit on hard acceleration, and somewhat on moderate acceleration. I don't mind that as much as my fuel economy has gone down since the Jr. program. I was running an Edge EZ before, and left it installed with the Jr. download. I was maintaining 13. 5 to 14. 5 on about 3 tanks of diesel. I disconnected the EZ and am running the Jr on level 2. My last 2 tanks have gone 13 mpgs, and they were with more hiway and less stop and go. Do I have a problem somewhere? I run 11760# at all times, carrying my welding machine and tools. My '99 24 valve 5-speed would go 16 to 19, so I am disappointed in my new purchase, except that I now have a new truck with auto and 4 wheel drive.

As I stated earlier in this thread, CA is really trying to crack down on smog. Today I get home and open the mail to find a letter from the South Coast Air Quality District. They are running a pilot progrm on the freeway onramps to find gross polluters. It's a van setup w/ camers and mirrors aimed at your exhaust path. They offer a free smog check, $500 towards repairs or $1000 if you scrap the vehicle. They say my new truck is a gross polluter #@$%!

Marco... . leaner under 1800 rpm might work out real well here!;)

Now we don't smog yet in CA for diesels but I hear it's coming. I don't know if their machines are for gasoline engines or all types. Stacks would come in real handy too ;)

BHaden, let me know how it goes w/ the PG7 and the Jr. I am going to make this change not only for the Jr but for better flow as well, and I am curious of the outcome.

Put in SW #1 today and drove about 40 miles. No change in the smoke. Before I left I thought about it and decided it would not likely affect it because the air flow at light load cruising around doesn't tax the stock air filter so I would not expect the smoke to be reduced by the PG7, except maybe at heavy loads and high air flow. Looks like I guessed right.

I probably shoulda mentioned, I still had the Rokteck at full advance.

What is the amount of restriction you guys are showing on your air restriction guage on the air cleaner? I know mine would show quite a bit of restriction even with a new filter before I modded the filter housing by adding another 4" diameter hole in the bottom of the box. A little more air would certainly help cut down on the smoke.....

My smoke is only no/low boost, so I doubt air is really an issue... There is so little flow that its not restricted... On SW#1 I dont move the filter mider at all (even pulling passes at WOT).

Ramon,They have constructed scaffolding at the Anaheim Hills weigh station to measure pollutants at the stacks;)

I am thinking about the Smarty Jr, but I have an '05 3500 nv5600 totally stock for now. I fit in the "likely to smoke catagory" and I don't want that. Does the regular Smarty cause these smoking issues or is it just the JR. ?

More beta updates...

Just got back from a weekend of camping, most of the towing was in 3rd or 4th on gravel roads, but there was a decent hill between here and there, and lots of accelerating... . Temps were 50's on sat and 70's today (~5K trailer, ~1K in the truck, guessing about 14K gross. . From 2750 to 3600 feet in elevation)... Overall much less the smoke than the standard software, I would say about 30% still... . Marco has just about got it dialed in... Also it seems to run cooler with the same power, didn't see over 1100* today, where same hill, same load, same temps, same gear two weeks ago put me at 1175*...

The Jr is great, and since Marco is actively working the smoke issue I wouldn't be worried about it.

I towed for the first time on Fri. Thirty foot travel trailer up some pretty steep slopes with SJ set in tow mode. steady light smoke all the time under load W/ beta software.

towed again this weekend

Hwy 17 from San Jose to Felton and back without the c3. 1, Boy was I happy. Then up I-5 to Redding and across west bound on 299. That is a grade ended up half way through I switched back to sw2. The transmision temp got up to 160 F, Should I be concerned ? I got down to around 30mph and I was worried about the transmission so I backed way out and the I got to the top of that portion and switched to sw2 and the next grades were not as bad, I was able to keep the speed up above 45mph and the trans only got to 150. The frist part was very twisty and I couldn't keep up the speed. At what point should the temp really be of concern ? See signture for the truck specs. the truck is a 2004 ca. model and no smoke cocern.

Where is your temp sender?

230* in the hot line is where I get nervous (with synthetic fluid) and 250* has me thinking about new fluid when I get home.

Where do you have your trans temp sensor? I have mine in my pan on the back side where they had it already drilled and tapped. On a hot day and pulling hard the most I have seen is 175. Out side temps have alot to do with it, even empty on a hot day it still gets to 165 to 170. And I haven't seen a big incress since adding the Jr or MP-8

wheres the probe

There is no probe The X-Monitor ties into the emc for the temp. So that is a good question. It is probably a rtd and I don't know where in the trans that is.

Thought I should post since my experience now is opposite of my earlier post.

Hooked up the tiny trailer, 5X8 loaded with my motorcycle. Total weight maybe 1,200 lbs. My truck smoked like a locomotive no matter where the throttle was. Even tried flooring it for a while to help clean out any built up soot. No dice, even cruiseing down the road at 65 mph you could see a continious haze. Unloaded the Smarty Jr. and driving stock until marco figures this out or I sell it. If it continues to smoke like this the Smarty is worthless to me. Don't need to wash the soot off the motorcycle or camper everytime I tow them.

I use to think it was a auto vs. manual thing but now leaning more toward air density. When it was cold out there was no smoke, now with spring here and warmer temperatures this thing smokes.

I hope marco comes up with something soon.

One thing I don't see here is anyone talking about rpm,if you apply too much

pedal at a low rpm you will smoke... ... . even in with stock software. Next time you tow pay attention to the rpm at your shift points and pedal application during that period of time.

If you tune out all the smoke potential you will tune out that resposiveness we all love so much.

On my 06/G56 I pretty much never see smoke at stock SW. If there is any I have to be looking at just the right moment. The S Jr smokes just about all the time and I drive VERY easy around town. RPM and boost don't seem to reduce it much, even going down real slow on the pedal and letting boost build. I'm relatively new to the diesel world but like the tech stuff and have a fairly logical mind, so I have a question. How does a "timing only" program cause extra smoke? I would think just the opposite would be true. I would gladly give up some of the extra response for maximum smoke-free mileage and whatever power came with that setup. If you want more power and don't mind more smoke, use level 2.
