Clutch Choices

I just installed sjr on level 1 went on a short ride. It does smoke allot but not for very long. Turned my white truck black quick. I wasnt towing I wounder if it will be worse with a load. I want to set it on #2 but I am concerned about the clutch holding up. I tow gooseneck trailers weighing 16 to 20k. You can tell the power difference, provide you dont miss any shifts. I wish I would have driving it first for more of a reference. I have read some guys get less mpg on #1 when towing, what do you think?

Mine smoked a LOT worse when towing. It does seem to be realted to load. I could not get around it by managing throttle pressure since it happened under very light throttle while accelerating from a stop. I dropped back from SW2 to SW1 for towing, and it still coated the rear of my white truck and trailer, so now I'm back to stock and nearly zero smoke. Waiting and hoping for a fix.

once again I feel I need to revise my last "smoke reduction % numbers. I noticed this morning (high humidity, 63 deg. ) that there was much less smoke than the other test day. Go figure??

you guys that are having smoking problems, do you have any other mods or are the trucks essentially stock? air filter and exhaust upgrades will help out some with smoke.

also, you're not hurting anything with a little smoke before the turbo lights. you might try shifting at a higher RPM also.

if you're concerned with soot on your rear 1/4, a turn-down exhaust tip will help

Speaking of air density I was wondering what an after market intercooler would do for it. I realize you still have to wait for boost to get rid of it all.

What about a cowl induction hood scoop? On a early Z28 camaro they had air pressure at the base of the windshield at very low speeds, and got quite higher at speeds. The windshield on a gen 3 is raked back a lot more then a old camaro. Again I don't think either will solve all the smoke. Just thinking out loud. I am going to try some air pressure readings at the base of the windshield.

I for one am going to purchase a SJR soon. If a dirty rear corner and some coal is all that I have to worry about with added power then I will be content. I have the mods listed in my sig and I am tired of "Driving by the Pyro" with the pressure box. If the Smarty JR gives the power and keeps MPG the same I am sold, Smoke or not. Who wants to sell me theirs??

All the smoke I see is pre boost so I doubt a intercooler would do anything, and even at high load, high boost, high egt the intake air is only about 20* warmer than the ambient temp. . . I think you need to be high in the boost and fuel mods to need an intercooler...

I have a amsoil nanofiber air filter and no muffler, other than the jr the powertrain is stock... A little smoke on high fueling would be okay, but I really don't like smoke in low rpm low fueling modes... .

And for those asking about the Jr vs the Sr on low level smoke I think the big differnce, as software is very similar, is that the Jr folks are the stock or mild modded folks and the sr ar the all out guys... much different crowds.

yeah, that makes sense... while I don't go looking for ways to try to make my truck smoke, I don't mind if it smokes a little as long as it isn't obnoxious.

whereas some guys can't stand ANY visible smoke

I had no idea there was only 20* dereference. The stock intercooler must do a good job. I find that very interesting. Good info AH64ID

I don't want anybody to think I dont like the sjr, haven't had it long & just can't help tinkering. I can live with that little bit of smoke. Don't like, if I could make it go away I would. They say that some drive line shutter is ok. I dont think so. It took weeks of tinkering but my shutter is gone now.

Thats good enough = I give up.

I was bone stock (06 auto 3. 73) on jr orig. software. On laterst update, I put in a flat AFE filter and the silicone cool tube from airbox to turbo. A little smoke is ok/expected, we just get beat up here in CA on emissions... so I will add one more thing after the chrome turn down... move out of CA :-laf

I have already been nailed by freeway on ramp smog testers. By nailed I mean they took a photo of my plates and mailed me a letter to voluntarily bring my truck in for repairs or send to the crusher for a whopping $1000. When I called them and told them it was a Diesel, they took me off the list since they are exempt for now.

for us Auto guys... I did try to play w/ the towhaul mode since it drops into 4th real quick, then smokes. If I lock out the OD until i get to 60 mph or so, then it's much better.

My truck is stock, except for SJr. It does seem that the G56 trucks are smoking worse then the auto's. Mine smokes so bad that I doubt a low restriction air filter and larger exhaust would bring it down to an acceptable level. Sure I expect some somke from a diesel, but mine was smoking like a locomotive! Shifting at a higher RPM might work while your moving, but mine smoked the worst taking off from a dead stop hauling a load. It really laid out a massive black cloud between shifts, regardless how easy or hard I pressed on the loud pedal.

A lot less smoke

I finally got the latest beta version loaded and immediately noticed much less smoke. There is still smoke, but it is over 50% gone and the performance feels the same as the "smoker" performance.

On the 3rd beta tune now...

Just loaded SW#1 from beta 3 and went around the block, NO SMOKE!!... well a little at 1000 rpms in 6th at 30 mph :D

2700 feet, 61*, about 65% humidity... Just real light acceleration like normal and saw zero smoke... Very happy. . will report more as I get a few more miles on it.

When did the 3rd one come? I loaded what I thought was the latest a week or so ago(what I thought was the second release). Did another come out in the past few days?

I am sorry to hear smoking problem with Smarty JR. I was thinking to buy one for my 07. But I don't like to have more smoking, I use XZT and don;t have any problem with smoke no matter which level I use.

milos

You guys are LOVE the beta#4 way less smoke than orig. software and dam near as much HP/performance. I could live with this SF but I bet Marco goes even further! (no I dont work for Madds)
