Unless you're planning to buy a new truck, go get yours weighed at a CAT scale so that you'll
know how close you are to your GVWR (and how much pin/hitch weight to allow) and your GCWR (and how heavy the GVWR of the trailer can be).
1. Take in all of the
big RV shows that you can get to and see what makes/models suits you best.
2. Join the
RV Consumers Group and get their ratings book.
3. Check out the various manufacturers' websites. [Ignore the "Empty" weights - they're like the "Curb" weights for trucks on the web sites. Look for the GVWR. ]
4. Use Google to find any on-line Owners' Group(s) for the make(s) you're interested in and browse
their comments/complaints.
5. Go to the type of RV Park that you'd like to stay in and see what brands predominate. Talk to the owners of the rigs you like best - most will be happy to show theirs off.
6. Go to a Consignment Lot (such as
PPL and look at older units of your chosen make(s) to see what condition it'll be in after it's been around for a while.
Repeat steps 1, 3, 4, 5, and 6 as needed to find
(A. ) a trailer whose GVWR won't put your truck over its GCWR,
(B. ) a trailer whose pricetag won't break your budget,
(C. ) a trailer whose floorplan you can live with, and
(D. ) a trailer built with adequate construction quality for your taste.
Once you've found the unit, then, and only then, go looking for a dealer.
