I have put some serious thoughts into getting a set of 19. 5" rims and some commerial grade tires. I have a few questions about them for you guys that are running them.



1. Hows the fuel millage? worse/better

2. Cost? for tires and wheels

3. What size tires?

4. What many miles are you getting out of the tires?

5. Any Problems?



Any help you be greatly appreciated. I am getting tired of paying $1000 for a set of 4 BFGs and only getting 25k out of them same for the stock Michelins.

Yeah corey... I'm with ya. I'd like to change over to 19. 5's when my stock tires wear out. I've got over 21000 miles on my stock BFG tires, and they have at least 60 percent tread left.



I'd like to hear about unsprung mass and what it means. That is something I've heard about when talking about 19. 5's.

I had same problems you talk about with my 97 I put 19. 5"s on and got double to triple the mileage. Fuel economy was not affected. I now have them on my 03 the wheels and tires that came with truck are in the basement with 15 miles on them I have no problems they are 245's

1. A little worse, but not enough to worry about

2. I just paid $1800 for 6 tires mounted and balanced (Equal) with all taxes and fees.

3. I run 245/70-19. 5 but I wish I had used a 285/70-19. 5

4. I've never gotten over 80,000 out of a set, but I drive hard. If I drove more conservatively, I could probably get more.

5. No problems for me.

Quite a few folks have made the point of how the extra weight will be so much that performance and fuel economy will suffer. I don't have experience with 19. 5's but let's look at the numbers: Unsprung mass or weight is that which is not supported buy the suspension (springs). Meaning anything beneath the spring line... IE your axles. wheels, tires, brakes, etc. This may not be a very technical definition but it is the simplified version.



A stock dodge steel wheel weighs in at 45 lbs. The rickson 19. 5 weighs in at 60 lbs. That's only a 15 lb difference per wheel. That's only a total of 60 lbs of unsprung weight... which for a 7,000+ lb truck ain't much. And I'm sorry but the rolling resistance isn;t that much different either. Don't believe me... figure out how to strap 30 lbs of weight to each wheel... and see how much power you lose... I bet you won't notice much if any.



Now you could argue that the tires are a lot heavier than the stock tires. I don't know how much the stock 265/17's weigh BUT I'm guessing somewhere in the neighborhood of 45 lbs or so. . I think a 315/70 BFG wieghs about 65 lbs. Most of us (myself included) will stick with a 225/70 or a 245/70/19. 5 if we made the change. Most of these tires are F load rated and a fair number are G rated. Now sure they will be heavier... but for pete's sake not that much. You may be looking at a 30 lb difference per tire and wheel (unless you went with one of the BIG H rated tires). AND if you get the aluminum ricksons... you will probably weigh less than the stock tire/wheel combo... again unless you go with the BIG tires.



Once my michelins wear out I'm getting 19. 5's. I may not need them but the idea of getting 100,000 miles out of a set of tires GREATLY appeals to me PLUS the extra load capacity. The cost of the wheels aren't bad... especially when you consider many folks spend that much or more to get a wheel that is no beter than stock. Hell... the stock rims cost over $250 a piece (for steel) unless you know someone.

This tire/wheel combo looks balanced to me.

This Michelin XZA would work in either a 17. 5 or a 19. 5 without lifting your truck.

The 10R17. 5 weighs 69# is 33. 9" tall and is rated for 4805 single & 4540 dual.

The 8R19. 5 weighs 52# is 33. 6" tall and is rated for 3525# single & 3305 dual.

While my stock 235/80/17 weighs 46# is 31. 8" tall and is rated for 3085#.

I would get excited if they came out with a super single in 19. 5 like this 445/50R22. 5:

Well I only want steel rims. I do have two friends that on stock tires/wheels got 90k out of tires. A couple of posts commented about 100k to 115k. I would HOPE the commerical tires would got twice that or am I wrong? What kind of rpm drop did you see?

I'm repowering a '69 d500 that came with 20" tires on it. Since it's a 2wd it's GONNA have a set of those 22. 5" super singles if I have to sell a kid to get them (I really wouldn't sell a kid unless I was getting a REALLY good price ... BTW they're all pretty smart :-laf )



The 19. 5's arent bad but I've seen aa couple of big rigs with the singles and they are friggin sweet lookin'.



I just gotta have a set... . eventually.

They make a 445/55R22. 5 that is the same height as my lo pro 24. 5s and it would save about 500#, sure is tempting.

Everyone keeps asking about RPM drop. . your RPM's will only drop if you run a taller than stock tire. Most of the 225/70/19. 5's are ~32" tall. The stock michelins run about 31" tall mounted... you may see a 50-100 RPM drop (accounting for various sizes of 225's) and with 245's at about 33. 5" +- you may see a 150 RPM drop or so.



I calculated a little while ago that with 225's I would not need to have my speedo recalibrated as it would only be off by about 1-2 MPH and over the course of several thousand miles it would only be off by a few miles on the ODO... I think by 100 miles for 100,000 miles on the truck.

Thanks guys keep them coming. My buddy has a ferd f650 and has 22. 5" he says that he usually getss 130k out of the rear drivers and around 80-100k on the fronts.

Absolutley. On my previous truck I ran 315 BFG's @ 34. 5" tall. Fit in the spare location with no problems. The 265/70/19. 5's are at or a little over 35" and should fit as well. The 225's (32") and the 245's (33. 5") should easily fit in the spare location. The 225's and 245's seem to be what most folks run when they swap.

If your looking at Rickson steel rims you may want to get an order in. Seems they are moving production facilities around and are short of stock. I have had an order paced since the middle of December and i think I may be getting close to receiving them!!!

I just picked up my Ricksons today at their facility in Maryland . I took along the bathroom scale and weighed the old tires that were on my truck and the new ones that they put on. The old ones weighed in at 92 pounds and new ones were 108. I got the forged eliminator style rims with 245/70/19. 5 Continental HDR tires. It was 85 miles to get there and 80. 5 to get back so I guess that comes out to around 5-6% difference. I will have to see if the dealer can recalibrate the mph and miles based on the revolutions per mile. The ride and first impressions are favorable. The overhead console(I know that it isn't a hand calculation-that will come later) actually read better mileage on the return trip . I will post some pictures when I return from vacation. Dan and Heather at Ricksons were very helpful.

I have Vision 19. 5 Aluminum wheels (Les Schwab) with Toyo 245/70 M608 tires. Over all I'm very happy with the set-up. Here are the cons. $2200, Wheels Stuck out 1/2" past fender before I put the fender flares on ($600). Wheel and tire combo weighs about 25 lbs a piece more than stock. The ride is rougher because the stock shocks are too light for the weight. The tire tread is twice as deep as normal LT truck tires which makes the truck drift with the grooves in the road. That can be down right scary on these Seattle freeways. I had to pull the front Wheel well liners back because the tire rubbed very slightly when cornering and loading the suspension combined. The Pros are they look dang cool. They increase weight rating to like 3300 lbs per tire. The tires have the forever tread, 13,000 on the tires with no sign of wear. At the time I purchased them they were 1 of 2 options for a 19. 5 aluminum wheel. They cost a lot of money but I am very pleased with the outcome and would do it again. As for my shocks when they wear out I'll be here asking for your input.

Matt, How much were the tires? Those are the rims i'm looking at and I will be getting them from Les Schwab as well. I believe that I was told that the rims were only 200 a piece. If that is true then that means that the tires are 1400! :{ :{ Any help would be great, thanks corey
