My "water in fuel" light comes on for about 20 seconds after the truck starts. This just started and I need to know what to do. I am at just less than a 1/2 tank. I noticed a power loss last couple of days and thought that the high temps outside were to blame.

Bummer. Have you tried pulling a sample thru the fuel drain on the bottom of the filter housing? If their is no water in the sample the sensor may have failed. Not a real common occurance but it does happen. If there is water in the sample change filters and clean the sensor.

Good luck.

Changed the fuel filter, and cleaned the sensor, no more light. I did check the fuel out of the old filter and some dirt can be seen, is that normal ? I installed a new sensor from Dodge when I rebuilt the motor. I am going to fill the tank with some diesel from Amoco that open up about a year ago(tanks are new). Does anyone think after that tank should I change fuel filters again ?

I'd just bleed a sample of fuel about every other fillup, to check for water & trash accumulation. It might help you to determine the quality of your current fuel source if fuel from one particular place seems to leave more of the above in your filter.

CrewCabDiesel,

If at all possible I only buy diesel fuel from those locations that sell a lot of fuel. That way there is less chance of getting bad fuel.

New tanks can have dirt in them too. I was involved in new fuel tank installations awhile back and we had to flush the tanks several times to get the junk out of them.

Also good idea not to refuel when the tanks are being filled; stirs up junk on bottom of tank.

I got a bad load of fuel once from a Beacon in norther calif and it took three changes of filters to finally get it cleared up.

Occasionaly, if there is an unscrupulous dealer, you might get some "tansmix". Thats the transition in the pipeline between gasoline and diesel. All the different fuels are pumped through the same pipe line and the transition is supposed to go into separating tanks but there are "midnight" dealers that sell it as good stuf. :)
