Rebuilding turbo

granatelli big g

I recently attended a dyno event in Greeley, Colorado where i met many Cummins owners who've upgraded to BD-Power Super B turbos. I've been told the Super B Special has a lot of lag, that i would want the regular Super B, not the Special. I'd appreciate as much information as possible.

As i understand, most aftermarket turbos are modified Schwitzer S300 turbos. I've been searching for details about these turbos. Some say that in their stock form, they are not worth the money. I'm trying to determine whether companies like BD are actually modifying these turbos, or if a part number such as 177430 is exactly the same and can be purchased for a much lower price. What is different between the S300G and Super B?

My second WH1C has little time left with frequent barking, decreasing boost, delayed spoolup, EGTs well over 1,600 degrees after just seconds of full throttle, and far less black smoke than there used to be, especially off the bottom. Boost at 65-75 mph is usually 2-6 psi, uphill may climb to 9 psi. In town, i often see no boost, have to really lay into the pedal.

I'm looking at the S300 series because so many have recommended them to me. My truck weighs 10,000 lbs, sees hard core off road use, lots of stop and go traffic, mild towing, and high elevation driving. Have yet to even make 16 mpg, hoping a turbo will help.

I'm looking for a turbo that will support well over 400 hp for now on a tight budget with far greater durability than the HX35. I want a turbo that will spool at least as fast as stock, yet provide much improved airflow and cooling. Replacement turbo will need to be tough enough to do the job on its own until i can plumb in my HT3B, which i expect will be a while, many months.

If anyone can verify a part number that is exactly the same as the Super B, i'd also appreciate contact information of where i can purchase one for a good price. I've read an S300 can be bought for about $700. I'll need everything to mount it like the downpipe as well so a kit would be ideal.

How much boost does it make? Do you know what it puts down on a dyno? What are the highest EGTs you've pegged? The HT3B is off an N14, way, way too big to spool on its own. A smaller turbo is required to spool the big HT3B.

How does your S300 spool compared to stock? Is it an S300G? 57 inducer, 12 or 14 turbine housing? What do you wish was diferent about your turbo like spoolup, EGTs, or boost levels?

Is there an entire kit with the oil drain, downpipe, gasket, and everything else it takes to bolt one of these turbos in? I'm definitely interested in prices and knowing where i can get it all. I need to be installing next week because i'm moving and will be pulling a trailer.

waste gate is set @ 30lbs

no dyno

1250 highest temp

slightly slower spool than stock not much

it is an s300g I think

I believe it has the smaller exhaust housing since it was sized for a manual transmission

I think all of us would like faster spool up, lower egt, ect. but I really have no complaints

as far as boost it has never been over 35lb because I do not need it

I know of no kit that will not cost over $1,000. 00 and it will not include oil drain.

If this is something that you have to do right away I would look for something closer to what you have now. It should be less money and easier to install.

This is my second WH1C in less than half a year so i need to upgrade to something more durable. So far most folks are suggesting the S300G or Super B but i am still open to other suggestions. Just want it to get me by until i can fab compounds.

What did you dyno in Greeley? If you did dyno, was it with or without the water/meth.

I think a Super B is a 57/65/12. It might be as big as a 62/65/14... ..... I'm not sure.

Htt sells the HTBG which is a 57/65/12 I believe.

The next step up is a HTT 62/65/12.

All of Indudstrial Injections turbos in the "Phat Shaft" series are 65 turbine wheels also.

Didn't get to. By the time they got there it was early afternoon and they were on truck 21 having started around 8:am. I would have been something like 64, after midnight and didn't have time to stick around. Too bad, i really wanted to see what i'd put down.

My 4th water injection pump is no longer priming at all so i need to search for a new one, hopefully an upgrade that will last.

Haven't found a good price for an S300G, full kits are well over $1,000. BD's only modification for the Super B appears to be the adjustable wastegate. I'm told either turbo will spool instantly and make way more power at lower boost, but will handle only around 45 psi max. Any ideas on where to get the best price for a complete kit with the turbo, gaskets, and downpipe? One kit comes with a new oil feed line. From what i understand, to install one of these turbos, the oil drain tube must be bent a little.

I don't know why the lines would need to be moved. Mine were ok.

Unless you look for a used one on some of these forums, It will be around $1000 for a turbo then another $150 or so for a downpipe.

Sometimes ebay sellers have the best price for new turbos.

We dynoed the last truck at 10:10 that night. That's not too late. :-laf:-laf:-laf

Shops are quoting me $1,600 for a brand new S300G, turbo only. Who has the best price for these turbos? Best price for a downpipe kit? Turbo Supply has not yet returned my call, looked like their prices are decent. Is it worth it to buy the BD turbo for the adjustable wastegate and entire kit?

with the jammer 4s and an EZ the little htbg has been the best money i've spent ...

spools VERY close to the hy that was on the truck and has not been over 1250 ...

and then only when lugged intentionally with a trailer on the back and a nice tight DTT to see how hot i could get it ...

just put it in drive and go ...

i figure i'm right at 400/800 ...

i've got the 58/12 version ...

after running a hybrid HX-55 this turbo constantly amazes me ...

went from driving according to the pyro to almost never paying it any attention now ...

there is a steep hill on the way to work every day that used to be a " 11/11 ", 1100 degrees on the pyro at 11 psi ...

after the htbg it has become about a 9/15 ...

this is with the cruise set at 65 ...

That's because a 55 is probably the worst turbo to ever hit the market.

I can take my 887 pump, 370 and my silver bullet and make 600 hp, drive, tow, race or whatever with it and there is no way you could do that with a 55

2broke thanks for th info. I am looking for a good set of 120-140HP injectors. To got with mine. I have the 14cm housing though.

This stock WH1C is barking while criusing at constant speeds, really struggling. Getting down to the last minute before I move to Montana so I called Anthony at High Tech Turbo and ordered an HTB2 62/12 and an HX40 downpipe. $1,800 and it should be here tomorrow. Double what I was looking to spend.

He told me that the HTBG is more of a stock S300G, not as easily upgraded. He said that their HTB2 line actually has a stronger frame and is more easily upgradeable. He said I will not notice any increased lag in spoolup and that it will flow great and really hold up.

He also recommended it as a top turbo, best with an S400 but that the HT3B 26 I already have should work OK. I'm wondering with my DDPIII injectors, 913 pump with 100 plate AFC and Star Wheel full forward, 17. 5 degrees of timing and dual water injection nozzles, will I be able to put down 500 hp on a dyno?

What setting did you have the edge on.

I am contemplating Stage 5's with an 01 6 speed, and the htbg with the 14cm housing. I would really like something a little smaller like the 4's. 120-140hp injectors is what I think I need.

man ... i've only looked at the ez once and don't remember how many settings it had but i set it on the highest setting

and for all the trash talk about the jammers i've been happy with them ...

only unusual behavior i've noticed is that occasionally they give me a little "rump-rump" after a hard pull and a quick slow down ...

and i have one of the first sets ... purchased through the HVAC auction
