I recently attended a dyno event in Greeley, Colorado where i met many Cummins owners who've upgraded to BD-Power Super B turbos. I've been told the Super B Special has a lot of lag, that i would want the regular Super B, not the Special. I'd appreciate as much information as possible.
As i understand, most aftermarket turbos are modified Schwitzer S300 turbos. I've been searching for details about these turbos. Some say that in their stock form, they are not worth the money. I'm trying to determine whether companies like BD are actually modifying these turbos, or if a part number such as 177430 is exactly the same and can be purchased for a much lower price. What is different between the S300G and Super B?
My second WH1C has little time left with frequent barking, decreasing boost, delayed spoolup, EGTs well over 1,600 degrees after just seconds of full throttle, and far less black smoke than there used to be, especially off the bottom. Boost at 65-75 mph is usually 2-6 psi, uphill may climb to 9 psi. In town, i often see no boost, have to really lay into the pedal.
I'm looking at the S300 series because so many have recommended them to me. My truck weighs 10,000 lbs, sees hard core off road use, lots of stop and go traffic, mild towing, and high elevation driving. Have yet to even make 16 mpg, hoping a turbo will help.
I'm looking for a turbo that will support well over 400 hp for now on a tight budget with far greater durability than the HX35. I want a turbo that will spool at least as fast as stock, yet provide much improved airflow and cooling. Replacement turbo will need to be tough enough to do the job on its own until i can plumb in my HT3B, which i expect will be a while, many months.
If anyone can verify a part number that is exactly the same as the Super B, i'd also appreciate contact information of where i can purchase one for a good price. I've read an S300 can be bought for about $700. I'll need everything to mount it like the downpipe as well so a kit would be ideal.
