Transmission question...Little help please?

91 Crew Cab Convertion

;) Just thought I would ask if anyone ever did this or was planning on doing this??? I would like a few more speeds... say 5 or so?? :-laf

i have a 10 speed RR behind an 8. 3 cummins. the only time i use all the gears is when i tow something real heavy, say 50,000lbs. the rest of the time i skip gears, trust me,it sounds cool to say you have a 10 speed, but your truck will be slow going through the gears, stick with a 5/6 speed, you will be happier.

I'd only want 5 more speeds if they were taller than OD! LOL!

I've got a 6sp and I want to go back to a 5sp... would REALLY like to go to an automatic, but will probably just end up w/ a 5sp.

with a 4k GSK and the ability to rev to 3500 or so, you've got almost a 2000rpm powerband... big trucks have about a 500-700rpm powerband, so you gotta have all those gears.

sounds like too much shifting to me, I know my 6sp is!

I'd like to have a 5sp with 1st gear a hair shorter than 2nd gear is now... 3rd gear be direct, about a . 73 OD in 4th, and a . 60 OD in 5th. or you could give it a granny 1st and make it a 6sp. I'd be in heaven :)

I'm not looking for lower gears but more of an overdrive would be really nice. I know some of the roadrangers have double overdrive that is why I am mentioning this. I also wanted to point out that a double disc clutch that would fit behind an 855 and could deal with copious amounts of torque and never slip is around $300-$400 wile a clutch for our dodge pickups that can handle less torque is more money!! I just dont understand why?!? It seems stupid that a clutch for are pickups is so much damn money. Someone please explain

those clutches are huge, less technology/ R&D required to hold at a given torque level, and they can count on a LOT more volume... I bet there are more of those clutches sold per year than the number of dual disk clutches that have been put in dodge rams to date!

One thing to note on the eatons, is that the ones with 2 OD are usually . 86 and . 73. I have never seen one higher than . 73 and that's the same as the dodge 6 sp. I've got a us gear that I got out of a junkyard for $300, and now my double od ratio is . 58 Oo. . Works great for going real fast :--) .

I do wish that they could make the 6 speeds rated for the high torque like they do with the eatons, but then it would probably weight about 600 pounds too.

I plan on going with the RR FSO-6406A. It is rated to ~650 lbs torque and is fully synchronized. There is also the FSO-8406A that is rated to over 800 ft lbs and is fully synchronized as well. Both of these are the same weight and same size. I also know I would be able to find parts for the 6406A pretty easily.

You need a low inertia Super 13. The one in my T8 is, and it is the quickest shifting one I've driven. Unless pulling a grade, I skip shift loaded on the bottom. Having 500hp helps, too. ;) :-laf

I have seen a 10 spd in a 93 truck. It was a 2wd but had a body lift on it so it looked like a 4wd. He had to do that because of the flywheel hsg being so much wider than the Dodge adapter on the back on the block. He needed the firewall clearance. Shadrach
