I’ve read some other posts that contradict this. I’ll know for sure in a week or so, when I get my EGT gauge in. For now, I’m cautious.

I have read that too! I believe the thread that was on was talking about the ETH engine tho.....

Is 1300 or 1400 or 1500 to high?

Based on lots of watching gauges with my 96 while it was stock, while it as mildly turned up, and know with a #11 on the hot side, I would say a stock 12V truck would NEVER have a melt down.

I had a chance to talk to some of the Cummins Engineers at Columbus a few years back (Probably testing ETH's back then) and they try their best to melt them down. They spend lots of time in the MTs of WY, CO, UT breaking all the rules (pull a low RPMs, overloaded, over fueled, etc. They also do lots of test cell testing.

I sure there are other critical variables in a addition to high EGTS that gets an engine into trouble but I bet they know our engines limits.

I would never worry about EGTs with a stock truck as long as it is total stock (no warrrenty gray area). I say this because lots of you, I have yet to read about damage that was directly related to to high of EGTS. DC would never be so bold as to let Cummins set the engines up that close to the edge and most inportantly, 440, or 450 or 550 ft torque is not much power demand from these engines.

I also have personally experinced that a empty truck runs higher EGTs (drag racing) then a truck with a load on it (rpms climb much slower and top out much lower). The harder you pull does not mean the hotter you run EGT wise.

How accurrate is your (or mine for that matter) pyrometer?

I have personally pulled back loads were I ran 1100 to 1200 degrees for more then a 100 miles at a stretch. BTW, the road was flat as a pancake. This was over 100K miles ago.

Common sense should prevail.

But I love to watch gauges too!

So what are safe EGT's in a stock 04. 5? I'm having a pyro mounted post-turbo and would like to know what are high temps. thanks in advance! Larv
