Can I remove the rear driveshaft and still drive in 4 wheel drive without screwing something else up?

My rear end finally clapped out and need to check a few shops out for prices on installing a new one.

I do not want to damage my rear axle any more than it already is, but on the other hand, don't want to mess up the transfer case or transmission.

Thanks for any input,

Bugman.

What happened to the rear end? Driving around with the drive shaft out won't keep the rear end from spinning, so if you have some pieces in there then can still do some pretty big damage. If you take the drive shaft out and pull the axle shafts out the rear end will not turn at all. You just have to make some covers for the hubs to keep the oil in.

Unless you have a 2 piece drive shaft and just remove the rear, you will loose all your t-case lube.

Other that those items, yes, you can drive in 4x4 on the front wheels.
