Can anyone tell me if the 03 six speed transmission is the same as the first six speeds? There has been a run of problems with them with people that tow heavy around here. The company I work for has had two owner/operators that have lost 2nd gear and I have heard of others. This all oilfield hotshot work, 40 ft G/N trailers ect. Just wondering if it was the same transmission. Am thinking about getting an HO when mine gets to 500,000 miles. If it's the same transmission, I think I'll just get an automatic and beef it up like the one I have now. Thanks in advance for the response.

In early 2000, the 6 speeds had a 1-1/4 input shaft, and had some problems with it, they learned their lesson and beefed up the input shaft to 1-3/8, and no more problems.

The only other thing I have heard on older units was hard shifting between 2nd and 3rd gears, something with the syncronizers.

I have a 2001. 5 and have had no problems, I would go with the 6 speed again.

As I recall, the torque limit/rating for the 6-speed is around 550 ft lbs - I would imgine that relates to continuous or substantially sustained torque application, but it's pretty obvious the bombing and consistent heavy pulling will affect the lifespan and reliability of the 6-speed...

It's a very good transmission, but like any of them, it DOES have it's limitations!

6 speed transmission in the 03s

I asked this question at the TDR nationals and the New Venture vendor rep said that the 6 speed is rated at 600 Lb-Ft of input torque. He also said that they hadn't changed anything to support the new HO engines. For what its worth. Ken Irwin

both of the clutches are gone after 60000 all towing heavy. 2001. 5 3500 with 275 injectors only. i guess if dc is bragging 305 hp with the same clutch, with heavy payloads, that's what you can expect. maybe that's why the clutch assemblies are backordered from atlanta as we speak...

I read in our TDR mag. that the input shaft is bigger like Gary said and the fly wheel is bigger. They beefed it up for the HO CTD. I think the problem is how it is driven. Not everyone knows how to drive a manual transmission.
