Based on your account, they determine which transponders they are going to let your receiver "pickup". They "talk" to your receiver(s) with account detail. They are in control. They are all powerful. They hid behind FCC rules, yet XM radio claims not to be controlled by the FCC. Go firgure! SNOKING

If XM tries to use frequencies its not allowed to use, the FCC will prove that they're wrong.

I don't know what you mean about DirecTV hiding behind FCC rules. DirecTV would love to be able to sell any service to its customers to make more money. Do you think they like not being able to just provide East coast and West coast feeds to every customer? Instead, they have to launch expensive spot beam satellites to deliver just the OTA networks available in your area. This doesn't benefit DirecTV.

At least there's competition now.

So if I leave NW and go to San Francisco, why do they not let me have the local Bay Area channels? SNOKING

I dropped Cox Cable and went with Dish for our 5er. When we had the service installed in our house in Vegas the tech said that there would be an extra $5 charge because we didn't have a "land line" and just use cell phones. Well, after a long call to Dish I convinced them that nothing was said about having a telephone when I signed up for the service so they could go squeeze $5 a month from someone else. I removed the receiver from our bedroom and bought an antenna from a place in San Mateo for $99 and we are in business. One problem. I should have taken the receiver that controls two TV's so I could have satellite in the bedroom. Boo hoo. I have been in Redwood City for over a month because my wife is the executor of her mother's trust and she has to get everything settled and pass out the dough. Oh, if you find a hub cap off of a 3500 dually, it's mine! Oh, the local channels can be switched from Las Vegas (mine) to San Francisco with no additional charge. I pay $5 for the local channels now so the nice lady in Bangladesh assured me there wouldn't be any extra charge. Wait and see, I guess. I've been to the Fry's in Palo Alto and the one in Sunnyvale so what else is there to see around here:)

Because there isn't enough bandwidth to put every local channel on the standard satellites. So, they use spot beams to broadcast locals just to the areas covered by those locals. Your NW locals aren't broadcast tot he SF area.

Think about it, what advantage is there to DirecTV to deny you access to your locals when you're in SF? They want to make money, and if you're a happier customer, you're more likely to stay with them.

You need to blame the owners of the local channels. They're the ones who fight things like this.

You miss read my post. I was talking about getting the SF Bay Area local when I was in that area, not the NW locals. SNOKING

Oh, OK. Now I understand. Well, they'd have to tell your box that it's OK to pick up those locals every time you move. Since the vast majority of their customers don't have dishes and receivers that travel, I guess they set it up for them.

Maybe FCC rules (based on complaints from local stations) make them only allow you to receive locals based on one location. There's still no advantage to DirecTV to not allow you to do what you mentioned.
