My truck is now living a fairly easy life of rare tow vehicle, mostly daily driver/highway truck. I am on my second clutch as is and it's starting to give up the ghost.

I'm toying with the idea of just going ahead and putting in a billet input shaft (any idea what these will hold vs stock?), FASS, crazy larry, and of course a clutch to hold it. Is the new SBC dual disc clutch streetable and acceptable for towing or am I barking up the wrong product tree so to speak. I want something that will hold around 600rwhp, but I also want it workable enough that I can back heavy trailers if need be. Thoughts, opinions or experiences would be great. And on rare instances I allow my wife to drive my truck;) so it needs to be something she can push down without using both feet.

I talked to Peter about this clutch. I told him what my mods were and my intentions, and he said the street dd would be perfect. I ordered the 3600lb plate load.

I'm shooting for 500+ hp, very civilized driveability, relatively quick shifting, and something that will let me back a trailer (although my turbo may have something to say about towing-we'll see).

I think it will be perfect. He said it will hold whatever you throw at it, as long as you're not sled pulling with it. It will even put up with 3rd gear launches if you have enough power. He also said that it has about the same rotating mass as a FE, so shifting will be similar. There is additional noise/drag due to the floating plate, but is should shift more quickly than a ceramic or feramic dual disc.

I am ordering a dual disc streetable version myself this week.

Awesome set up. Best of both worlds. No chatter, and lots of holding

To say NO chatter might be a bit optimistic but they'll definitly give you more holding power with similar or slightly better street manners.

Sean, don't put anymore in the white truck... put it back to stock, keep the injectors and turbo, and put them on a new megacab automatic! take the equity you've got in the white truck and buy a built auto

Ha Haaaa, that's a thought that goes through my mind about twice per month. Good advice Forrest. Good to see others having similar thoughts.

The only thing is that I'm not excited about is having a truck payment again. Even if I did strip my truck and sell it, I'd only have $25-$27k towards a $50k purchase. If I kept the mandatory $5k to $7k to get my trans done and lift installed, I'd have a huge payment.

I'll keep my truck and row gears for a while. I'm saving a down payment so I can have TWO trucks!

I've got news for ya, you can get a mega for a LOT less than $50k

Sean got his 04. 5 600/6sp QC 3500 BRAND NEW OUT THE DOOR for under $28k... I'm sure MSRP on it was in the 40's. and this was before all the "employee pricing" and all that BS was the rage.

you just gotta know how and where to buy a truck. there are low overhead/high volume dealers that will essentially give trucks away to keep their volume up. they're gonna make their money on other vehicles, service, and bonuses from Chrysler

Amen to that ;)

And BTW - I am looking as well for a dual disk, But for sure for some light sledpulling, So the ? is 3600lb or 3850lb?

Agreed. But a loaded 3500 Laramie 4x4 Megacab has an MSRP of $54,000. Subtract about $12k (I'm guessing that's what Tomeygun and DSM will do) and you're still looking at over $46,000 otd. Add a built trans and an exhaust brake, and you're over $50k.

More than I care to spend at the moment. I would like to, but it doesn't make sense. Maybe when I have a child on the way...

Peter said NO sled pulling with this clutch. It can not handle the heat. He said I could do 3rd gear launches if I have the clutch completely out in a 3 count. Any more and I'd need to go with the ceramic clutch, regardless of plate load.

I know Forrest. I drove one the other night and it didn't help me want to keep my truck:( Especially since it was faster than the GMC w/6 speed allison. I've got about 12k equity in my truck and then the mods right now. The one I drove was 48k. I know Bonham has them at around 37,xxx, but without a whole ton of options. Don't get me wrong, I love my truck, I just need to decide if I want to go nuts with it, or build up slow with another one.

There would be no sled pulling, just driving it hard. I take off in third right now anyway:D

The diffrence between the 3600 and 3850 is pedal pressure. The manners otherwise are the same. The only decision to make there is, do you feel tough punk? Well..... do ya?

Sean, you've already put two trannies in that thing... the more power you make with it, the more you'll wish you had an automatic...

400hp is fun... and you want more... but when you get in the 600 range, there isn't much you can do with it, and you're still left w/ a slow shifting transmission with no warranty!!

(I'm trying to talk MYSELF into an automatic truck with this post too, so don't feel like I'm beating you up)

Forrest

you've already got the turbo and injectors... sell the box, put the truck on TDR... it oughta fetch $30k ;) :p :-laf

and take some of that equity, buy a built transmission right off the bat, put the turbo and injectors and a new box on there, and have some fun!!

Tom,

Light sledpulling?? :-laf

Kinda like JUMBO shrimp, you know

Maybe a few local pulls, the kind that use a 20k sled, and most diesels can drive it out the back door, woo-hoo!
