Cant say from personal experience, but when i did the research on this product it looked very good. The main reason I avoided it is some people have reported it is not fully compatible with the 2nd gen 24v trucks and can't read or clear all error codes, only a limited amount of control on codes. On your '97 truck, it "might" be fully compatible, but just guessing. Either way, it is an interesting box and it will be helpful to find out it's TRUE abilities from people with experience.

I can't see how it could figure fuel mileage on a 12V. On a fully mechanical injection system, you need a flow meter of some sort in both the fuel feed and fuel return lines.

don't think it will be of much value on the 12 valve will do a lot according to the mfg. for the 24 valve. Ed

I'd rather spend that $169. 95 on diesel. It can't be any better then the factory unit on my 05, which is not all that good anyway. Besides, if that read out is only a big as the truck key, I wouldn't be able to see it anyway and keep one eye on the road. Save your $$$.

I bought one for the code reader, speed correction, and instant mileage reading. The code reader works well. I have been able to read and clear all the codes I have had. The speed correction requires some tweaking, but works well. This also helps you keep track of your real mileage if you have over sized tires. And, the instant MPG calculations help you find the most efficient speed, and most efficient driving style. It is larger than a truck key. I have mine mounted on the steering column, and it is very easy to read. Another benefit is that it can be used on any OBDII car. I don't know if it would work on your 97, though.

I have accurate MPG and speed from my GPS, as well as trip mileage. I already have a code reader, so if it don't do MPG forget it. Besides, the company don't seem to have the time or smarts to tell me what it will do on my ol 97. Usually means that if they don't want to talk before the sale, you can pretty write them off AFTER the sale.

Well crap, there goes my dream. Here is the official answer:

Hi,

Unfortunately the Dodge, GM, and Ford diesels were not compatible with the ScanGauge for model years 1996 and 1997.

Please let me know if you have any other questions.

Thanks,

That's what I did, Don, and I've regretted it ever since. Even though my 97 was a gasser and got 13MPG, it had every bell and whistle I could put on it. I got an '05 and never really liked it, and I put every bell and whistle on that one to make me like it too. Now I have the '01 and I will NEVER get rid of it, EVER!

That pretty well sums up my feelings too. I have absolutely no intentions of getting rid of my ol 97 - ever! I have owned quite a few, and this is the sweetest ever.

I love my 05. I didn't think anything could be better then my 95, but this one tops it.

Had my '05 been a 3500, a LB and had leather seats w/heat, I might have liked it better. What really turned me off was the fact that when ULSD came out, my mileage dropped from a steady 23MPG to 17MPG.

What I DID like about the '05 was the Quad doors... now if I can find a shop to stretch my '01 out..... :D

To be honest with you, I have never noticed a drop in fuel mileage with ULSD and I hand calculate every fill up.

What I don't like about my 05 are the weak headlights.

I never had a problem with the headlights... . I switched over to the Sylvania Ultra Whites and loved em..... man, I shoulda sucked it up and kept that truck... . a Dodge mech in Maryland bought my truck... . at least I have that comfort.
