I never condoned that practice but the State inspectors can require you to do what they call a "snap idle" test to test exhaust opacity during an inspection.

Nothing scares me more than that test. I pray every day that Ohio doesn't lose it's mind and start requiring it.

Ha, I think all states are about to, if not already, require it. Why be paranoid, all engines can handle that, just don't do it cold. I would worry more about stripping the cam or oil pump gears, than spinning a rod when revving it up that quickly. It's running empty, with NO boost!

What likely happened is a seized piston, or an overfueled piston, that broke the rod. It also could have broken in cold weather, with a damaged oil filter that bypassed some dirt thru the oil and seized the connecting rod bearing.

And finally, a manufacturing defect. When they crack the rods, it may have developed a second crack.

I was always under the impression that high rpms on an unloaded engine were worse than those same rpms on an engine with a moderate / normal load. I'm not sure if that is a carry over from my gasser days or where I picked that idea up.

What kind of rpm limiter did a carburetted car have? Just the coil misfiring around 4000 rpm on a v8, and valves started floating and cutting back performance, other than that you did not even have a tach. That's why the fear of blowing it up.

An unloaded engine will have a weaker power stroke than a loaded one, and the other centrifugal forces that break rods are the same.

Ours have a "high idle" of 3500 rpm, and even with bigger injectors, you can't go past, except with some downloaders.

I should also mention engine runaway. The guy left it idling, spilled gasoline nearby, and the fumes got into the air intake. The ECM cuts off fuel flow if you overspin the engine, such as while going downhill, as low as 1100 rpm. The engine can continue to "diesel" away on gasoline fumes, of the right concentration, until something breaks at 6000 rpm or whenever. Shut off the engine when near gasoline fumes. I don't know whether a propane or natural gas leak can do the same, depends on the temperature.

The good part is that it may even have happened during service at the dealer, if they idled it while replacing fuel filter on a nearby gasser.

Did anyone notice the video (1 and 2) showed the trucks license plate? I'm assuming the dealership is videoing the truck for warranty purposes. That's ok, however, I'd be pi$$ed if my truck showed up on Youtube without my consent, especially with my license plate # for everyone to see.

if free reving a stock truck would damage the rods, the factory programing wouldn't allow it

I don't know, I guess I'm old school. Mashing the "throttle" under no load and screaming the engine up against the governor just doesn't seem like a good idea to me.

I might be willing to buy a programmer if it simply limited peak RPM to, say, 2500.

I suppose a small adjustable throttle stop discretely mounted beneath the pedal would have the same effect, but I'm not sure what the penalties (if any) would be if it were discovered.

Looks like a stolen recovery to me.

Yup. That's what they look like out here when the "coyotes" steal them to haul in their illegals. They just bash right through the brush and washes with the hammer down. No going around stuff.

I think it's retarded when guys rap out their diesels trying to sound cool... so I'm not a big fan of free reving either, but I don't think free revving to stock rpm limit is going to hurt anything.

Now, see, the real problem to most of these videos (if you continue to search via youtube) is the cheap crappy bear in the bed of these trucks. Take away the crappy bear, no more broken truck. :)

:-laf :-laf

Forest, I've always been a fan of the simple "blip". Some times as far as to make a small amount of smoke. If I just matt it to the floor, I get a lot of rattle.

I am still laughing from the first video... . I have seen some crazy things like the one in the first video. . Kinda makes you sick to see in real life. . ONLY in TEXAS... Ha ha. . I cant believe pple would even take it into the dealership like that... I really like how they showed the empty beer cases in the bed of the truck. . I bet that truck has heard Getter Done a time or two. :-laf. I remember last time I went wheeling in Alto, Tx at Shilo ridge there was a 07 mega hemi 2 wheel drive with paper plates that sunk it in a mud hole and on Sunday was trying to find someone to pull it home it wouldnt start:rolleyes:...

yeah you wouldn't believe the condition the vehicles that would come into the dealership when I worked there.

Also we are a ranching and farming community so these trucks are driven hard and put away wet.

I knew a guy who worked at a John Deere dealership. After they got done rebuilding an engine it was standard practice to place the engine on a dyno and run it full throttle for about an hour or so. I don't know if that was with a load on it or not. But Caterpillar does the same thing with their engines before they leave the factory.

Dynos load the drivetrain, so it's not nearly as hard on the engine. Anyone ever lifted a flywheel (or torque converter and flex plate) off a CTD? The thought of all that inertia trying to stop and start with blips of the throttle and no load has got to make the rods beg for mercy. I cringe every time I go for the annual smog check. I just stare at the dude in my truck and hope he finishes the job quickly.
