Should schedule B be modified for my truck use??

About 80% of my driving is towing 6500 lbs and that is mostly in the spring and fall. Engine temp does not get over 195-200 and don't normally go over 65 mph. (Is there a corralation between engine temp and transmission temp??)

With such a light load would it be wise for me to extend the fluid change on the rear end, front end, and transmission on the "B" schedule? The "A" schedule says nothing about the rear and front ends and only says to change the transmission fluid and filter at 100K.

Don't have a transmission temp gauge. Have smelled the fluid and it smells new and also looks good. transmission works great and no noise from rear end. It doesn't recommend changing transmission fluid until 30K but see alot of folks changing at 15K which is where I am at now.

However, I change oil/filter, air filter and fuel filter more frequently than "B" recommends.

IMO it would be wise to do it just to get rid of all the break-in wear particals floating around. Did I answer my own question

Any wisdom out there on this?

Based on the driving you describe, you need to follow whatever is the "severe service" schedule (I don't remember if that's A or B). Pretty much everyone who owns a truck falls under severe service. The only ones who don't are people who park the vehicle and never drive it. Ever. Not even home from the dealer... it just stays on the lot forever.

Schedule B for the Majority

I would have to agree with Ryan an Doc the (B) severe duty is going to be the schedule to follow for 99% of us. The (A) schedule I believe would have to be some one that drove strictly interstate driving only, no city what-so-ever in temps above 32*F with the purest of air an hauling a box of toliet paper in the bed from what I get from owners manual decription. I changed my gear oils out at 15,200 miles on my 03, the fluid that came out looked new, mechanic friends shop we done it at, well he flamed me some about it. I may change it out again at 30K, but I'm looking into getting the PML covers front an back. My oil&filter changes are at 5K. Trans will be at 25K or 30K. I tow very lite compared to some about 6K on a TT at the most, but not very often here lately. Have only towed once this 04 year. To sum it up for my driving habits, thats the way I will judge changing my fluids out. I also have gauges for the trans an when I towed the TT back in Aug in 97*F outside temp the gauge reading never got over 160*F but I am allowing for aleast a 20*F reading, so it could have been around 180*F.

If my memory serves me correctly, for the Cummins 600's on schedule B, you need to change your axle fluids at every oil change, maybe every other oil change, but the axle fluid never needs to be changed on schedule A. Somethings seems wrong with that. It seems that an A- or B+ schedule would be more appropriate.

thanks for the feedback

Well think I will stick to the "B" except

1. for the transmission and and will do it now at 15K them every 30K after that .

2. Dont't see the need of doing the front end every 15K since it is not under power. Will do it now at 15K them every 30K.

3. Engine oil and filter every 5K.

4. Fuel filter every 10K

Looking at NOT using sythetics, except for differentials.

Think my wife likes this truck more than I do. Oo. Maybe I can sneek in a

TAG II. :-laf

Rbattele is right. We are all severe duty. Unless you live next to the freeway and never hit a stop sign. All driving is stop and go. Stop and go is severe. So technically I qualify as super severe service. Add the cold weather warmups to that and you got a world of trouble. Its better to be on the safe side than the sorry side.
