I used to adjust my bands all the time but Dave Goerend of Goerend Brothers Transmission (Highly regarded here in the Midwest) told me that once they are properly adjusted that they can be left alone unless you have problems. He said if you go through the adjustments, torque in and back off the required number of turns, you end up in almost exactly the same place as you were. The symptom of a band that is too loose is a perceived rpm gain or slippage between shifts. That's caused by the band releasing before the internal drum clutch engages so it slips a little. According to Dave, this doesn't hurt anything and there is no real need to adjust until or unless this happens. The other condition, bands adjusted too tight gives no driveability symptom but can cause excessive wear. In that case the band is still engaged at the same time the internal drum clutch engages and something has to slip and wear. If you adjust wrong you can cause harm. I wouldn't trust my dealer to do the job IMHO. So Dave suggests that if you know they are OK now, leave them alone and just change fluid etc.
