I need a scope for my Marlin 45/70, 1895. I reload my own with the Horandy 300 gr HP and IMR powder (can't recall the powder #) I'm @ 2200 fps with this lighter bullet. I'm using it for ground hogs and the little b's are escaping me @ long range. Generally, If I get the bullet down range in the general direction I kill something :)

My brother is big on scopes and convinced me to do this. He said a 4x is what what I need (??????) for under 200 yards. Any suggestions. I'm told the recoil will destroy most scopes (????????)

It would be like, way cool to have one mounted on the old Winchester 45/70 w/it's 26 inch octogon barrel, but I'm told it's not as easy to do as with the Marlin's side eject.

Besides, that Winchester is too heavy to carry and too good for hunt'n whistle pigs anyhow! :) :)

Thanks in advance

Scope for your Marlin

A fixed 4x would be a good choice. I have a 2x7 compact Redfield on my 1895SS. I used that scope because I had it on hand. It has held up through some very stiff loads. I've shot some 300 grain loads and there is no comparison in recoil to the 420 grain cast bullet loads I shoot. So, you should have no problem with a quaility 4x scope holding up. Does your Guide Gun shoot good groups with the 300 grain bullets? Most 1895's I have seen shot do not like them and shoot much better with heavier slugs. These were the older micro-groove barrels.

I have a Bausch & Lomb Series 3000 1. 5x4. 5. This is on my Ruger #1. There have been many hand loaded 500gr. round nose bullets fired, and no problems so far. Of course, I can't hit anything past 100 yards.

I like my Marlin best for it's function and the Winchester (actually a Browning Repo of the old Win. 1886) best for its looks. The Marlin shoots a wonderful group. The Winchester does not. After four shots the barrel is so dam hot it must be effecting the group cause she begins to shoot all over the place. The Marlin barrel is round and short. It must not be effected as badly????

My brother bought me the Winchester/Browning new from my Father. I didn't have the cash to float it. Realizing I loved the looks and feel of the big a$$ gun he bought it for me. Dad had bought it new back in 87. Wonder if my bro knows I need twins for my truck!! :) :)

I bought my Marlin used many years agpo when I was in 8th grade. A lot of gun for me then as I was shooting a Marlin 39M @ ther time.

I have been thinking of trying the Burris with Posi-Lock. I dont know anyone with one but it makes sense that once it is sighted in and you lock the reticle in, recoil should have less effect on it, as the reticle isn't bouncing against spring pressure. I think this will be my next scope. I do have a Leupold VXIII 1. 75X6 compact that I really like, I have had it on my #1 In 416 Rigby for probable 200 rounds with no problems, I do not think you can buy the compact model anymore.

I have a Burris posi lock scope on my SSK . 338 jdj handcannon. It isn't affected by the recoil (which is severe) which is good but the optics aren't as good as on my Leupolds. I really want a Leupold for it and I know people that are running them on jdj's with good results. JMHO
