One of our trucks is in for a transmission rebuild. Upon disassembly we found that the flywheel is being being scored on the engine side. There seems to be some interference between the wheel and the plate on the engine. Everything appears to have been assembled correctly on the previous engine rebuild at a local DC dealer.



Scoring is about midway of the flywheel diameter. Interference is at a high spot of the plate on the engine. Flywheel can only bolt up one way, correct? Any hints or ideas? Time pressure is impending plowable snow, so we need to move forward with getting the truck up and running.



This is a '92 W350 CTD 4WD. Engine rebuilt at just under 100k miles. Probably no more than 10k on the rebuild. Trans has been rebuilt a couple of times (blown cooler line, trans overheats, you get the picture. ) Reverse went away on the last snow storm.

I haven't been under one of those trucks, so I don't know if the bellhousing on the transmission completely covers the clutch setup. If not, maybe a rock getting kicked up. Who knows... Can you verify that this wasn't there after the first rebuild?
 
Like Tom said and possible the TC is ballooning during high plow use causing flywheel to push into block. Seen this happen on hot rods that didn't have balloon plates. I was told we (CTD) didn't have to worry about that due to rpm range. I think it's only one of two things that can make the flywheel contact the block. Both of which have been mentioned.

The crank was checked for end play once the trans was pulled. No observed problem - no movement end to end. Had not heard of the TC ballooning before. That could be the issue as I know that the trans was run low on fluid (broken cooler line) during a busy snowplowing event. Components probably got just a little warm.



If this is the case, then the damage happened a while ago and is not a current issue. Our trans shop is very well qualified with top notch techs. They were going to check for interference and clearances, then reassemble if no problem found. I'll pass this on to them.
