Getting last drop of oil

ECM Wire Latch

In my quest to solve my EGT problems, I am seriously considering changing from my current AFE megacannon setup and trying the Scotty II. I am a bit skeptical though (especially after hearing rediculous claims) about the reduction in EGT's I will get.

I am interested in hearing from those who've had BOTH and can provide solid numbers to back their findings, whatever they might be.

See truck for sig, and pulling my 11K trailer can nail 1350 pretty easily on a grade. Real good for cooking bacon and eggs, bad for manifold, turbo and engine:rolleyes: .

Any discussion is appreciated. :-{}

What are you coining as ridiculous claims? Both will considerably drop your egts if in fact your vehicle is begging for more air due increased fueling.

I had the BHAF sealed to the hood and the 4 1/2" cowl hole and just changed to the Scotty II air system and still dropped my temps about 50-70* non towing. I will be towing next week and can tell more then.

Hi Kevin,

I agree with Seed Guy (I'm pretty sure), you may want to call someone good about a turbo change.

Failng that, if you can route cooler outside air to your intake (which IS what a fully installed Scotty does) than the hotter engine compartment air it should help some.

I don't think that you'll be able to obtain your "solid numbers" unless there's someone who duplicates your scenario in every aspect.

I have the aFe and a bud with an identical truck (though with an auto and stock tubo with a 16cm ex. housing - see my sig. below) has the S-II. The main advantage to the S-II is that it's "box" is designed to draw air from the original fender hole and optionally through the cowling at the base of the windshield if you drill the hole. The aFE, on the other hand, has no "box" and gets all its air from under the hood. That will work against you, IMHO, during the summer months.

My friend went one step further and got an air dam from the guy who builds the Air Bulldog hoods (Doug Hofeldt). This has an air intake right in the middle with a 4" flex tube to pipe the air into the stock airbox. He was able to plumb a 4" PVC elbow into the bottom of the S-II "box" and connect the flex tube for yet a 3rd air supply to the S-II. He's seen a definate EGT reduction with the addition of the air dam.

My feeling is he has the better set up with the S-II. I had my stock air box with Amsoil foam filter plumbed into the cowling, but didn't care for the turbo noise. That's my only problem with the the S-II. But, the air dam approach would be a nice alternative.

This doesn't really provide you the answer your looking for, I guess. Maybe I'll swap filter systems with him and we'll both go do a test drive to see what it does. If we do, I'll let you know.

For what it's worth,

-Jay

Claims of 300* drops. ??? And I did NOT see a considerable drop in temps with the AFE setup. It may flow more air, but it did not give me the "significant" drop in EGT I was told it would. Maybe I have a problem somewhere else, but my temps seem to run higher than others with similar if not identicle trucks. The Scotty II seems to make sense to me- NOT pulling more air in from a hot engine compartment. That's why I'm looking for people who've had expereince with both.

Hey Bruce- Let me know what you find after pulling that trailer- not that our trucks are similar in HP;) .

Kev,

I see from your signature that you're running an Edge EZ and RV275s. A Scotty II or aFe MegaCannon will NOT give you the max EGT reductions that either system is capable of. You're just not pushing enough fuel for the stock airbox to be starving you badly.

As power levels climb, air demands increase and this is where the Scotty really begins to shine through. Past 400 - 450 ponies, and under load, 350F has been the number most commonly reported to us (now at 5 results with 350F), with one customer seeing 400F (I suspect a gauge problem though).

With your EZ and RV275s, the MegaCannon and Scotty II in either hush mode or dual inlet will be equally effective. Which is to say, not extremely effective. Maybe a MAX of 100F at WOT or heavily loaded.

Went from a BHAF to a Scotty II with 300 marines and #10 saw an instant 100* reduction in just hush mode (no cowl hole yet, cant' find a damn saw)

I have installed two Scotty 2(both holes) in place of the AFE MegaCannon systems and both truck got at least 100 deg reduction just cruising down the freeway. The Scotty 2 does work!!! At my power level it has given the same kind of reduction in EGTs at the PDR HX-40 gave.
