I recently purchased and installed a Scotty III intake, and for the benefit of those considering upgrading their intakes, I decided to post a review of the product.

I've attached a photo comparing the Scotty III to the stock airbox.

Allow yourself about a half hour to not rush yourself and do it right.

First step is to remove the stock airbox. Disconnect the wiring holding the intake sensor and remove the sensor bolts using an 8mm socket. Keep the bolts as you will need them to install the sensor in the Scotty III. After removing the sensor from the stock airbox, you will want to install it into the Scotty III intake at the provided location where the turbo hose connects to the intake. Remove the stock airbox turbo intake hose connection by loosening the clamp with a flat screwdriver. Pull the hose back away from the airbox.

Next, remove the stock airbox by using a 10mm socket to remove the front bolt of the box. Gently pull the box out of the fenderwall and set it aside. You might want to place the nut back on the bolt and tighten it down in case you need it in the future.

Now you are ready to install the Scotty III. Gently work the intake into the fenderwall similar to the way the stock airbox mounted.

Re-attach the turbo hose to the intake and tighten the clamp to make a good seal. Re-attach the wire to the intake sensor (Don't forget to do this or it will throw a code). The Scotty III sits nicely without any mounting brackets, and mine hasn't moved at all since I installed it.

What can you expect from your Scotty III? Personally, I have seen better performance in mid range power, turbo comes up sooner, and a nice side benefit is a more pronounced turbo sound. The only mods I have to date are DPP 4 inch exhaust and the Scotty III, soon to go with Edge Juice and Attitude. No doubt, a better than stock intake and exhaust will be required to boost horsepower without ramming exhaust temps through the roof. The Scotty III has been super reliable, reasonably priced, and a very well-built product. It can't be beat for pulling cold air into your Cummins motor with both fender and through-the-grill air feeding the beast.

Nice job and thank you. How much did you pay for the scotty III and where? . I am about to get one myself. I am still wondering which will lower the egts more the scotty 3 or the other progaurd one (forgot the name)

Minder/Washable ?

Is there any port for mounting the filter minder. I did not see one or could'nt tell in the picture. And I assume that is a washable filter.

Nick,

The Scotty really helps to keep the egt down. I haven't used anything else, but suspect others will perform about as well.

Tony,

Mine has an orifice for the filter minder. I had one of the early filter minders that kept pulling down, when I installed the Scotty the f m was no longer pulls down. I atributed this to increased flow.

TMatterer,

I suppose it would depend on your dealer more than anything else.

There isn't a port for the filter minder on mine, and one isn't needed since it is a Ram Air setup. You'll never pull the minder down anyway. The filter is washable with the AFE kits. I think they run somewhere between 10 and 15 dollars. Rod from Wildcat diesel says they have never seen above stock levels of silicone in the oil which indicates the filter is working properly. The warranty couldn't be voided as long as the filter is maintained properly and doesn't let dirt in.

I like mine! 5K miles on it so far with no problems. Mine had the port for the filterminder, but the FM and factory grommet didn't fit very well. A little black RTV around the grommet and all is well. As someone mentioned the FM really is just there for show now, makes the dealer less curious I suppose.

My only complaint with the system has nothing to do with the Scotty III itself but with the factory plumbing to the turbo inlet. With the Scotty III the inlet changes position from where it was with the factory airbox. This puts the factory hoses at a goofy angle.

I'll be replumbing that with some polished SS in the near future and will post pics when I get it done. This mod should make a much more even transition from filter to turbo.

I'd buy another one.

a VERY credible complaint!

the length of the entire scotty3 system attributes to the TERRIBLE intake angles -- went from 90 degree bends (stock airbox) to about 110 degree bends :(

Seeing that you asked, DP, I put the aFe Megacannon setup from Geno's ($294. 04). It uses the aFe Pro-Guard 7 filter that is supposed to be very good. I was very impressed with the metal heat shield's fit and finish. The installation is as simple as the Scotty. I cannot compare the two, because I have no frame of reference to the Scotty. I doubt that there is a world of difference between the two. I also liked the metal parts vs: plastic. I added the pre-filter (not shown) as an afterthought.

We dropped the filter minder after testing it more and the design of the intake does not allow it to function. Now the housing is nice and round inside for air flow throughout. ;) I even changed the height the cone for the filter end a few times until I acheived the optimum air flow over it. That was before it was released.

Anybody know if the air box changed for the 325/600 version?

Dean, how do you like your fiver? I am starting to snoop around for one again.

I didn't like any of the systems out there, no one seems to address the crappy rubber bellows from the filter to the turbo so I made my own. It's ceramic coated inside/out. The heat shield isn't quite finished in these photos. Total cost including coating, filter and pre-filter was around $150.

It's great, just like home when we go on a trip. We could live in it full time, but just enjoy our home and where we live here in Connecticut too much. If you have any questions about the Teton, drop me a pm.

This is similar to where I'm headed with the plumbing replacement between the ScottyIII and the turbo. Got a buddy that works in a stainless steel fab shop. They have a mandel bender capable of work with up to 6"od tubing.

How come everyone always disses K&N? I've had them on every vehicle I've owned just about with NO problems. People who have done oil analysis say that K&N and other major filter manufacturers all rate about the same. Plus... the K&N systems for the 3rd gen replaces EVERYTHING. The airbox and all related hoses and X silencer do hickey.

Let me know what you guys think... . I like it. I'm sure you can find a better price on it that Crutchfield has (a stereo place) but Crutchfield has the best pictures I could find.
