I've been running the "Scotty" cone-style K&N for a year now. I've been debating ordering the Psycotty system... however I am concerned about a couple posts I've read about the alleged excessive noise in the cab. Is there a noticeable diference in noise between the open cone filter vs the Psycotty system with the hole cut into the firewall?
I really do like the turbo sound I get now. My silencer ring has not been removed. Lookin for feedback from anyone who has run both systems.
Thanks,
Russ

Russ99,

I am currently running the Psychotty, and have ridden in a truck with the Scotty and the noise type and level will change when running the upgrade. I think the Psychotty sounds like a hoover vaccume cleaner in the next room/ DC10 kind of thing and took some time getting used to. I don't have the silencer ring in and with a better exaust, I can now hear the turbo at idle. AWESOME. It's definately not as profound with just the Scotty. I do find myself "tuned in" to the whistle and whoosh of the Psychotty and although a little frazzled at first, like the change very much. I gave a buddy a ride to work the other day an didn't tell him about the upgrade before we took off. When I gave it the go pedal the turbo spooled up his head snapped around to look at me ... he had the goofiest grin I think I have seen in a while. He just said "Cool" and kept on grinning.

I didn't mind cutting the hole, just wanted it covered if I didn't like the system. After it is done though, I think I would have just glued the insulation on and never looked back had I not liked the sound. This, ofcourse, is not the case. #ad

I ran just the Scotty setup for about two weeks before installing the Psycotty. The Psycotty can be heard very easily, the Scotty cannot be heard in my truck (straight pipe). The sound is not at all bothersome to me, in fact I like it. If you remove the silencer ring it may be too loud. One thing I can say, the Psycotty lowers the EGT quite a bit more than the Scotty set up and I would not ever go back to the stock housing. This is one mod that I would definitely do if I purchase another Dodge Cummins.

I have ran both. In December just after I got my truck I put on the Scotty, had that for 16k mi. At 16k,I put on the Psycotty, and am now over 22k. You ask if there's a noticeable difference? Yes. Is it much louder? Not much.
Driving down the road, the only time you'll notice it,is if you turn the knobs that operate your dash vents/A-C. As the vent flaps open and close you'll hear more turbo noise for about a second or two, then it goes away.
The psycotty works great, and I liked it so much I sold off my factory air box.

I recommend you try to take a ride with someone who has the system. I would describe the noise as "different", and whether you like it, don't like it, or even notice it after the first week will depend a lot on your personal preferences. I "like" the rumble of the Cummins at typical highway cruise speeds. I also "like" the barely perceptible turbo whine when I put my foot into it going up hills with the stock box. Since installing the Psychotty, I "don't like" hearing the higher pitch of the turbo spooling up and down as the cruise control works to maintain speed over relatively level ground - under these conditions I prefer just hearing that steady Cummins drone with no additional background noises. These are very much "personal preference" issues, with no one answer that will be right for everybody.

The PSA works. Yes, it is louder. More fuel=more power=more smoke. There is a give and take with this product. I feel it to be a nessecary piece when bombing. MHO. It has really made a difference for me and my truck.

I'm personally stuck at Scotty version 1. 5 (880 filter, big ol' hole, no "cannon") until I get $xxx (unclaimed) freed up for plastibombing---I'll be honest. . tried to make a homemade Psychotty shell... what a PITA! He's earned every penny he gets with his product... the only mod I have to this is a leg of panty-hose as a debris catcher before chunky things get into the filter folds... . It's pretty whistle-y this way, and I suspect the concentrated aim will make it more "pronounced" #ad
but so far the wife only complains about the exhaust roar (4"open/short #ad
) rather than the intake scream,

idea for Scott1---you mentioned filter-crush happened when you closed the wide end, so you left the gap open... what about a side-vent thru the fender oval?-- could you then get away with a closed "wide" end, thereby eliminating all underhood air from being admitted to the system??? eh (have ho idea which way the air-flow would go. . if engine uses all the cowl air, it might get more from the fender, and if the cowl actually provides more than the B needs, it would just vent away via the same port... . rich
