I read the other post on seal driver and thought about my experience with the same problem. As most of you have had to do, I have had to replace many seals on the first gen trucks. I have proper sized drivers but i experienced some problems. I always put new seals when I repair the brakes or when stopping a leak. More than once when I knocked the seal in, the garter spring jumped out and of course the seal didn't stop leaking. After the first time taking the hub back off, I remebered to check the garter spring. The spring can be put back in place with the seal in place but it is quite a chore.

I no longer knock the seal in. I have rigged up a threaded rod and plate to pull the seal into place. I have not had a problem since.

Incidently I like home made remedies for problems and use them very often myself. Just though I might save someone some aggravation. Using the axle may provide a cushion that eliminates the garter spring problem.
