When I had my pinion seal replaced, I noticed some white sealant on the splines in the differential that the mechanic said was to keep the oil from migrating in the splines. The sealant was simular to pipe dope. It was kind of gooey and did not dry.

Should the front end of the drive shaft have this same kind of sealant to keep the transfer case oil from getting to the companion seal? I have a new drive shaft, and I need to know before putting it on.

Thanks in advance

Bryan

Does the shaft?

Does the shaft slide in and out of the transfer case? If it does I wouldn't put anything gooey on it that might inhibit this motion. The joint on the pinion yoke is behind the seal. The joint on the transfer case should be after the seal. There is normally another outer seal that is seen on the end of the transfer case output housing but it is usually really just a dust boot. to me it sounds like a heavy white lithium grease... like lubriplate it lubes any movement on the splines and is thick enough there to profide a seal against oil splashing and leaking past the splines. . why they want to seal that off is a ??? to me, but the lubriplate is awsome stuff. . at work, i put that on everything [paper/plastic/steel/rubber gaskets & 99% of the time, they will come off in one piece very easially, o-rings, spline shafts. ]

i've got a can in my toolbox at work and 4 cans tucked away in my shop locker... somehow one managed to find its way to my home toolbox ;)

www.lubriplate.com seems to be their website, but i can't access it... maybe it's just down for service? they'd probably have a list of retailers on their site. . ?

I've been all over the web looking for it and I found a place that carries some Lubriplate products. http://www.imperialinc.com/grp399.shtml
