Replaced Injector But Still Have Nock

I've got an '06 that is starting to drive me crazy with what sounds like octane ping on a gasser... ..... rattling valves. It's almost like there are two sounds coming from under the hood. A smooth idle/exhaust note and this annoying rattle under light throttle. Peg it, pull it and it seems to dissapate or maybe I just can't hear it anymore.

I'm NO diesel guru and know only enough to be a danger to myself, but I've owned a '99, '03, and have a '97 with 280k on the clock and this '06. This sound never came from any of the others and it seems (I MAY be crazy OR just paying MORE attention) to be getting louder. I don't have another truck to compare it to and I don't remember the noise when new>>>>>>when I think I would have been the most paranoid.

I searched the site and get no "hits". It may have been beat to death, but I cannot find it.

I have an aFe intake and MBRP 4" exhaust with muffler (cat fell off somewhere?????). That's it for the mods.

Can you put in too much air and not enough fuel?? Does advancing timing help or make it worse? Is there a problem??? I've got 40k on this one.

Truck seems to run good and idles well except when first started. When started first thing in the morning there are "burps" while idling like someone tapped the go pedal barely. Occasionally I have the "long crank" starting issue, but it's rare.....

HELP! (Even if you say... ..... "you're paranoid"):{

Sounds like injector rattle to me... some will say its normal, others will say injectors are on the way out. Throw some additive like Lucas or the like to it and see if it changes.

Should Lucas "quiet" the rattle or what should I look or listen for?? I thought I had read somewhere that the "burp" during idle was an injector on the way out. Am I going to have to take it to the "*******" for a test???

Load it down as heavy as you can and drive it like you stole it. You will be amazed at how smooth it will sound and how many of the annoying little sounds dissappear. :-laf

I had a noise like that. It ended up being a bad injector line hold down clamp(#4)Found it after the line broke, the bolt was still tight, but the clamp was loose.

it seems like the 06s are more prone to this. I have had the same issue from time to time and when it gets bad i dump some power service in and run it alittler hard than I normaly do and it quicky clears up

My Grandson's 06' Meg-Cab was very quiet when new, but as it aged (65K now) the engine is much louder. He has had it to the dealers for this on several occasions, but it was never cured. They did find and replaced an injector at one time.

Pops

What you are experiencing is the heat grid cycling on and off. When cold and you go for a start the heat grid comes on and after starting it cycles on and off for awhile. This causes a load and un-load situation on your alternator which also causes the rpm to go up and down. Just watch your ampere gauge during a cold start and you will see it go up and down along with the rpms.

I'm not getting the "surging". On start-up idle it just "pops" every now and then. Not consistent. That doesn't bother me as much as the knocking. I bought a diesel so I'm not looking for quiet, but this sound just doesn't seem normal.

Is there a test the ******* does for injectors that MAY point out a problem? I don't have a problem with $100 deductible to fix the issue. I dumped the "100 Gallon" bottle of Lucas into a full fuel tank and made the go pedal eat a lot of carpet. No improvement after 30 miles.

I haven't tried this yet, and I make no claim to be knowledged in injectors or high pressure fuel systems.

If it is injector related or caused by the injector, what would the normal sounds at the individual injectors and lines be if you used a mechanics stethoscope to listen to the various components, injectors, lines etc? Possibly listen to the exhaust manifold at each cylinder, head bolts etc. I have one and just might try it this weekend.

Yes. Why wouldn't that work? If one or two sound different from the rest... ... . you should be able to tell... ... . makes sense... ... ... any mechanix have something to say???

PS made NO difference today. Cold or hot makes no difference either. Sounds same at startup as it does at 200 degrees.

The only thing I could get to work on my 03 was a couple of cans of SeaFoam every so often. I would think the valves were tapping, but it is the injectors. Put the seafoam in and run it hard and it would smooth right out for me.

Pretty soon I won't have any diesel in the tank, it will all be Sea Foam, PS, and Lucas... ... ... ..... and I thought diesel WAS expensive!

WE should NOT have to put additives in to resolve a problem unless it is to treat for gelling or for cleaning... ... . I change my fuel filter every 10K, run synthetic oil now and I don't drive easy by any means. I tow equipment and my truck stays loaded with a work cap and tools all of the time.

Should I have the injectors tested???

I belive some one else said this but have you checked to make sure all of the hold downs for the injector lines are tight. I though i had a bad injector but it turn out to be a loose hold down.
