Hello All,

Winter is fast approaching here in Maine and I have looked everwhere for a good snow tire in the 265/70R17 size. No luck!

What I have found so far (Bridgestone Blizzaks, for example) aren't manufactured in load range 'E. '

Any help or guidance would be greatly appreciated! :D

After waiting thru two winters, we finally have the new Cooper Discoverer M&S 2657517 E rated on my wife's 03.

They work great either studded or not!!

Several friends run them on various vehicles and they are the best I have seen in 4 decades of Alaska driving!!!

They are just recently available and some dealers don't know they are available.

Bob

Howdy from the Greatland!

Check out Cooper Tires in LT265/70R/17 load range E in the Discoverer S/T and Discoverer ATR. Fairly new and tire quality from people I have spoken with who own them is good. One is fairly aggressive tread and the other is more all terrain. Supposedly the other tire manufacturers are going to expand their 17" tire line now that Ford is upgrading the Super Duties to 17" and 18" but don't know when.

Thank you RRiffe and BRobertson!

I never would have found those on my own! I think I'll go after the Coopers right now. Great to hear there will be more 17s on the way. :D

Not to push my luck, but has anyone had any luck finding a steel wheel in this size for the snow tires? My dealer Parts dept. has struck out.

Again, thanks gentlemen!

I have a set of ST wheels with tires in the classifieds. I have not had much interest, if you are interested make me an offer, you could sell the tires and keep the rims for your snows. I am in MA.

Thanks, Bertram. I'll take a look at those. I looked at the link nickleinonen provided to the nokian tires and they look like a good studdable tire. They aren't out yet so I will probably wait a month or so before putting the whole thing together.

Saw a pair of Bridgestone Revo's this evening. Looked great, E range tire. Friend paid about 600 for a set of 4's. You might want to check into them. I am.

Went to look at them. They are definately PASSENGER tires. Don't bother looking at them and wasting you time. Friend was misled thinking they were E rated tires.

I put the Big O on and studded them for pulling my sled trailer. Wasn't worried about the E range in a winter only use tire. Full warranty with all the frills. . Doc

I'll definitely check out the Bridestones, thanks. I looked at the Revo on tirerack.com and there were a lot of good reviewes regarding snow traction. I am going to call a few tire places around here and ask specifically for the Coopers, Bridgestones and if they can get the new Nokian. This is great information!

Doc, dumb question on my part but what is the Big O?

Big O is similar to Discount Tire, Les Schwab, etc. Usually seen in Western United States

Thank you. Were are still congratulating ourselves here in Maine because we now have electricity, so these places are unfamiliar to me. :D

I'm sorry to sound flip, I didn't mean to come across that way. I really appreciate your advice. We do have Tire Warehouse here and on your good advice I am going to take a print out of this discussion and see what tires we can find.

The replies here have been a great help. I also note the discussion that Ford is going to a 17" wheel and hopefully we will see more of a selection soon. I would really like to see the Bridgestone Blizzak in our size and a load range E. I have them on my '95 dually (I think it is the model W196) and they were fantastic around here where we get lots of snow interchanged with ice and freezing rain. They tell me they don't last that long but I have them mounted on a spare set of wheels and I can throw them on when the first snow flies.

Thanks again!

Hi Bertram,

I looked at the classifieds and couldn't tell which wheels were yours. What was the title? Will they fit my 3500 SRW?

Thanks!

I had the Coopers on my old truck and they are a pretty good snow tire. I bought them in Canada after puling my empty sled trailer north to pick up some new sleds. It was a death ride with the stock all terrain tires. I needed 4wd most of the way. The loggers were all using the Coopers. Loaded on the way home with the Coopers the roads where worse and I never needed 4wd. The BFG's AT are also a good choice. They are D side walls but if you check their weight rating is actually higher then most E rated tires. I run the BFG's on my 2004. 5- i just got them and have already bought a second back up set for later. Hummer take off's can be gotten at a low price in 315's anyway. On had pack roads the coopers my be a little better but in fresh or loose stuff

I think the BFG's are better. The key I found was to have the BFG's sipped. Makes a huge difference, is cheap $10 per tire, makes them run cooler and last longer. My buddy has been using the 315 for years and the winter performance of the CTD and the 315's caused me to switch from chevy to the CTD. While everyone else was chaining up he just rolled on by and went to the top with out spinning the tires at all.

6 speed is also a big help when its slick out. He has a 3500 LB SRW and hauls the biggest camper possible plus a 8000 lb+ boat and trailer. He is actually over weight on the rear axel when fully loaded and has had zero tire issues. The big BFG AT's are awesum. Good luck.

PS I would not buy solely on an E side wall rating. My old Coopers I had were a C and I never had a problem, but I never hauled near the max weight. 8K offshore boat and trailer was about the max. I also found that the c and d side walls do ride alot smoother and like a said if you check the weight the tires are rated for you will be suprised. My BFG 315 have a higher rating then the stockers. I have my stock steel wheels and tires available if any one is interested. My are the polished ones off my 2004. 5 and tires have only 1K on them have 4 tires and rims mounted an a unmounted spare as part of the package. I but a fullsize 315 on the spare rim and it will fit under the truck with a little guidance when cranking it up. Nice to have a matching spare.
