Have any of you used a “universal” seat belt to replace a driver seat belt like the ones in my’98 that are made into the seat? Something like this:

Or, have you replaced the webbing in the original? Mine is starting to fray and it doesn’t smell real good from using it when I’m all hot and sweaty.

I haven't done it, and wonder if you'd be able to find a solid upper mounting point in the rear door? A pal used a place called Safety Restore to have his factory belt redone, but that was for a Wrangler.

I just had a look at the Safety Restore website: https://www.safetyrestore.com/ It looks impressive. I'd look into that before I tried to retrofit anything into something it wasn't intended for.

I wish I had known about this in 1998 when I replaced the badly frayed seat/shoulder belt combination in my mother's 1974 AMC Hornet. I had found a duplicate in a wrecked Hornet that had obviously been garaged all its life. It saved her life 2 months later, so it was obviously still good. Still newly rebuilt would have been better. The car, sadly, was a total loss.

I'd stay stock versus aftermarket, stock systems are engineered by manufacturers, tested and approved. Not saying aftermarket ones are bad, but as mentioned wherever you end up placing the upper loop most likely won't have strength needed to protect you as stock. I'd go with sending your stock ones out to be correctly redone, and guaranteed to meet specifications.

Stock isn't available new. To me, buying a used seatbelt is akin to buying used underwear.

The original mounts the retracting assembly in the top of the seat back. What I'm talking about is doing the same thing, mounting it where the original was mounted.

Oops, misunderstood the OP. You've forgotten more about finding parts than I'll ever know, but if I was looking for a "universal" belt I'd be thinking Jeep or SxS places?
