Seat Cushion foam replacement

Any of you guys out there who did the seat cushion foam replacement in TDR issue 35 page 14 want to chime in on how things turned out and how the seat is holding up?

I just got back from a long trip and that seat has got to go

My a** is still sore

I'm either gonna do the cushion replacement or take it to a shop and have the whole enchilada done. .

I did the seat cushion fix as soon as I read about it in issue 35. It's still just fine after a LOT of miles of my 200 lb butt bouncing on it. I did put some sheep skin seat covers on that I bought at Costco at the same time. The seat was getting a little shiny so I thought I would get the covers before something worn thru. The seats still looks and rides great.



It someone wants to do the fix and does not have the mag e-mail me for a copy of the article.

There ya go. That is what I used and it works great. It will make a lot more sense once you take out the 4 bolts holding the seat bottom to the frame, then it's pretty straight forward. Oh, and so far I've only put the carpet in, but that's cause I haven't got the time to go get some new foam. The old stuff has GOT to go!

The new visco elastic foam looks like it would make a nice comfy seat... I may try a piece of that.

Seat Covers

Joe,

Seat covers will be next after I upgrade the cushions. Someone had a set of cool seat covers with the Cummins logo on them here on the TDR... anyone remember who that was or where they got those??

Wow thanks guys for bringin' this one back up. I remembered the post and TDR mag issue and man I have been needing to do this for a Looong time coming. The whole Muncie trip was a harsh one to say the least.

While you have that seat apart--think about a inflateable back rest---I put one in last year and made a world of difference!!

I followed the directions in the TDR mag, but found the 2" foam was too much. I sat up too high. Maybe my seat was not broken down that much. I removed the 2" foam and used 1". Much better. 210 lbs. 9 year old seat.



The brand new edition of the TDR mag has an article about seat repair. The member used a special type of foam. Claims it came out great.

I did mine way back when but used egg-crate and carpet instead of the recommended foam. It firmed things up, but it still leans towards the left. I've been thinking of just swapping the pass/driver sides (if that's possible) or just make the Mrs. do all the drivin', NOT!

Is there an issue with swapping out the passenger & drivers seats if the driver seat has the 6 way adjustments??



I don't remember seeing anything in the latest TDR about seat cushion upgrades?? Can you tell me where to find it?

I swapped the foam cushions on my '98 a month or so ago with no problems. I have the electric seat on the driver's side and that was no issue. You can't swap the covers, just the foam. The hardest part is the covers are clipped to the foam with hog rings. If you look at the seat while not sitting on it you'll notice a seam or rib running across that is located just under your thighs. There's a hard plastic rod incorporated in the cover there and one in the foam and they are linked together with 4 (I think) hog rings. At least, that's the way it is on mine. Just spread the rings apart with needle nose pliers. Otherwise, it's pretty easy. Just 4 bolts hold the cushion frame to the base. Some wide clips hold the cover on the cushion frame.



You may choose to put a piece of cardboard or carpet between the foam and the supporting wires if the foam has been cut much by the wires, which is basically what was recommended in the TDR article.

Did you try to actually, switch the drivers seat witht the passenger seat? I know the proper way would be to just put new foam in and I'll probably wind up doing that any way. I just thought that a quick fix would be to just swap the two seats.

Yes, that's exactly what I did. I felt the left side of the driver's seat was getting broken down a little. Since the passenger side gets little use, I figured I'd rotate them, just like my tires!

Just have to find a foam place here in San Jose and dig up some scrap carpet squares
