Second gear starts

My neighbors son has a well used 99 24 v stock motor and transmission . He loves this truck. He came by today to do something ? Stayed a bit then left. When he drove down to the stop sign I could hear it start in second gear . Not first then shift to second also when he left the stop sign. I know what the problems and issues are and fixes but how long could you drive a truck like that and not know it . It’s very easy to not really notice it. I know this cause it happened to me a couple times in my years with a 99. Question is how long would /will a transmission go starting in second? I have texted his dad to call me . I think I need to tell them don’t you. If I’m wrong it’s ok but if he burns up the transmission I would feel bad not saying something right?

Ok dad called me. Son knows it’s starting in second gear. Truck is going in for total transmission rebuild soon. Good luck right.

Never hurts to point it out, what they do with the info, you can't help any of that.

Depending on what's wrong, if it does not sound right to you especially with hundreds of thousands of miles in one of these, I will put my dollar on its not good for it.

Yep he came back yesterday again. 2 bd gear starts might leave him stranded somewhere. New rebuilt transmission and front end etc. lots of money on a old truck. But he loves it so why not right

I can only assume this relates to an automatic transmission? If not pushed hard or heavily loaded, might not be overly serious - but certainly not right. I have a 6 speed manual in my truck, and driving empty, always go from a dead stop in 2nd gear - low gear is so low, and there's enough power that 2nd gear starts are no big deal - but heavily loaded, or towing our 5er is a completely different story... I swapped to a heavy duty ceramic/metallic clutch way back when the stock clutch started slipping when RV towing at minor grades in 6th gear - many years and a few engine upgrades since then...
