I was wondering if it is just me or if our truck boxes are this way. I have a long box and putting on a Pace Edwards cover. When I went to put the rail caps on I noticed the Pace rails just barely touch the front of the truck bed rails, and the back is way over. So I measured from inside the bed rails and found that the front is 65 1/2 inches and at the tailgate the measurement is 62 1/2. Why is this?, my truck has not ever been wrecked, so is it the way DC sent it, I was just wondering if other boxes are like this or do I have a so so box thrown together... ... ... ... ... ... :rolleyes:

SpicyJam,

Not for sure, but starting in 1988 all the truck beds made are narrower in the rear than in front. Really made all the people who make things to fit in/on the beds happy. :-{} :{

I found this out when I tried to upgrade my deliver truck from a 72 to a later model. 1987 was the newest I could get without modifiying the existing box that sat on the edge of bed. (big $$$)

crabman :)

I think its like that to be even with the cab then roll off on the rear. When you put something square in the not so retangle then it makes you go hmm.

Good luck

Andy

Yep! They taper down.

My topper is off my 95 Z71 Chevy (what does z71 stand for). It does not cover the stake holes on bed rail in the front but does fit the rear. Maybe that is why there is more room in the 2nd gen cab. It really is wider. :) Mike

Z71 is a RPO (regular production order) number- a code for a certain option or package of options. It doesn't really stand for anything. Look at the right side of the core support on your CTD- all the codes on the plate are RPO's.

As to the tapering of the bed, it's an aero thing. Chevys are the same way- dunno about Fords.

The Z71 stands for the off road package. It includes a skid plate,performance shocks, and..... ??

Ya after I thought about it it makes sense I guess. So I put the smooth rail caps on first then put the cover on, looks real nice now no stake pockets showing, never used them anyway. Later Jim.
