Dropping Fuel Tank

Hello,

2003 Dodge Ram 3500, SRW, 2WD, manual transmission

I have a water separator and fuel filter to add to the fuel system. Currently I have the OEM external pump. Not exactly sure, but I think a secondary pump may be needed to overcome the little bit of restriction that will be added. I was thinking of purchasing a second OEM external pump and OEM filter housing, then placing this assembly between the water separator and fuel filter. The second OEM external pump would draw fuel through the water separator then pressurize it through the filter. By using a second OEM fuel pump, I could carry a single spare fuel pump as a backup for both pumps. The OEM style fuel pump would be available for purchase at many parts store in case I needed one while on a road trip. I have the idea that having a secondary pump along with the OEM external lift pump is ok because BD sells a kit for doing exactly this. I would think there would be a rise in fuel pressure? Maybe the Carter pump in BD's kit has an internal bypass that the OEM pump does not have?

Thank you for any help,

Probably just as far ahead to buy a FASS and use it. The more fittings and lines the more chances for leaks. You don't really need a backup for the FASS\AD pumps if you upgrade the suction line to the tank. The CP-3 will draw enough fuel to limp in somewhere, these external pumps should allow flow thru them as long as you don't break the system.

Where you have to run in snow and cold a fuel heater is a good idea. You would have to rewire the LP circuit to a set of relays anyway and that just ends up being more wiring and potential for issues.

second the FASS,insalled one on my 03 about 375,000 mi ago, took the oem canister off, fass 150 has a 3 micron fuel filter and i use a 10 micron water seperator.that and an 74 gal in bed fuel tank, best upgrades i have made.

Thank you both for your responses. Not wanting to be harsh, but I would like some help with the questions about adding an auxiliary fuel pump. I have sufficient reasons for not using FASS, Airdog or similar. That would likely become a long discussion of its own which we could have on a new thread.

Thanks again,

Adding a pusher pump is not a bad idea, it has been done and nothing wrong with it. As long as the pumps are internally regulated it keeps the pressures adequate, or you will need an external regulator plumbed back to the tank. A pusher pump can even be added to the in-tank system to boost the delivery.

The OE filter housing is hard to deal with in the restricted space, probably not a good idea. FleetGuard makes housing that takes a standard spin on filter and can include a fuel heater that would likely be a better choice for the WS. I simply do not know how effective any of these pumps will be drawing fuel thru a filter\WS, they are really not designed to do that. Add in to that equation weather and temps and you could have a problem waiting to happen. A better overall design would be pump-WS-OE housing-3 um final filter in that order.

Your final filter really need to go between the CP-3 and the OE canister for the best effect, use a 3 um spin on there, to bets use the OE housing and multi pass filtration.

The point is everything you are trying to do and piece together is available in a single unit with minimal install hassle plus additional benefits. Not to sound harsh but your comments are indicative of a subjective view rather than objective when it comes to a FASS system. There is a big difference between comparing the suitability of a product on its merits, or, comparing it in context of its manufacturer and other social memes. You really have to take the political aspect out of the equation to make a rational decision, you short yourself a lot of ways by NOT being objective. If that is the only way look yourself in the mirror then I wish you the best.
