Does anybody know of a good key holder that could be secreted away outside of the truck? I would like a backup plan if I someday lock myself out. I have seen these things before, but I have tried all the accessory places here with no luck.

There is a plastic holder available that fits in your wallet, also a little box with a magnet on the side which you can put under the truck somewhere. The plastic thing I have came from a wallet srore. The Metal box came from Wal-Mart I think. bg

Like for everything else, I use a strip of duct tape! No fancy holder needed. It would just get dirty being attached to the outside of the truck anyway.

Since gamehack mentioned using duct tape. I feel compelled to give equal time to my method: baling wire. I simply took a small length and put one end through the end of the key and the other end through a hole in the frame and wired it tight to the inside of the frame. If I ever need it, it will probably need to be cleaned off, but it will be there.

Simple, cheap.

Two of the greatest inventions of all time: Duct tape and baling wire.

My truck has a good supply of both at all times.

I know some people don't like to carry their wallet, but I had a duplicate key made without the rubber on it and leave it in my wallet, it has saved me a couple of times.

From now on I want to be know as the undisputed "TDR King of the Lockout"! If you want to know how to lock your keys in your car or truck let me know, I've done it way too many times. I personally use the box/magnet from Wal-Mart. Duct tape works good but when you lock yourself out as often as I do you need something that can be reused and duct tape might not stick the second or TENTH time. #ad

Little related story: My wife and I were car shopping after hours one night. I am driving and leave the keys in the car when we get out. She hits the power lock button! (don't laugh this is not the first time we've done this!) #ad
As we're waiting for Pop-A-Lock we look at the cars. There are at least a half dozen brand new Lincolns unlocked after hours. #ad
Our car was one of the only ones on the lot that was locked! What a night. #ad

Arcticat,
I think the item that you are looking for is called 'hide-a-key'. I have them on all my vehicles. #ad
It is the first thing that I do whenever I purchase a new/used vehicle. You do not want to be in BF Egpyt in the middle of night with keys locked inside vehicle or even worse, no keys at all! #ad
Bailing wire, duct tape or whatever, just have a spare set. #ad
It is sort of like a spare tire, when you need it and don't have it, it's to late. #ad

My local locksmith has a key holder that looks like a dog terd, I suppose you could throw that in the back of your truck and no one would touch it except maybe a Ford guy.

Got a sliding rear window? The cheesy, cheap, breakable, wimpy, low security latch is like $12, I know from experience... . #ad

Acat, At least you live in a place where I once rushed off to get on an airplane, so excited to see HVACs truck that I forgot to roll up the driver's window. The truck sat at BTV in the parking structure for a solid week with the radar detector on the dashboard and nothing, absolutely nothing was touched in the truck. #ad

David,

You have CRS almost as bad as I do. #ad
I keep an extra key in my wallet, but I managed to lock the truck with the key in the ignition and my wallet tucked in the 4X4 shifter boot once. I had to listen to sarcastic cracks from my wife when she opened it up with her key. Thanks for the tip about the back window.

Thanks to all for your responses. I went and got a hide-a-key from Wallyworld, but I wasn't confident about it staying put when I go off-road. So I put the key inside the center cap on my ST wheels. The magnetic hide-a-key sticks to the end of the axle and keeps the key from rattling around in there.

(Just a thought) Those center caps aren't that easy to get off, what are you going to use to pop off the center cap when you can't get to your "tire iron" inside the truck???

I relaxed the retaining clips just enough so that the cap would pop off when I pulled on it as hard as I could. Otherwise it would be impossible.

BTW, I've seen one of those dog s@#t key holders that somebody else mentioned. They are so realistic that you would never guess. Reminds me of this fake rubber rock I used to have. Thing looked just like a piece of granite. I loved to throw it point blank into my buddies windshields just to see the look on their faces.

I keep a spare in my wallet but have never used it. I must have a unique system. That agravating buzzing noise comes on when I leave the key in the ignition. I do on occasion pull it out so the buzzer doesn't drive me nuts! I had a hide a key up under rear of a GMS and snowbanks brush etc has a habit of removing it. #ad

Get a spare key made and put a coat of light oil on it. Then use electrical tape to tape it to on of the wire bundles somewhere under the rear end. The truck sits high enough so there is pretty easy access. The key should last for years and the dirt and grime will hide it.

High tech solution;

I used that low tech solution of ninearrow's starting with my '52 Pontiac (of course I did not buy the "52 till '53), and it served me well through quite a number of lock-outs. (like on the all night drive at about 3 AM when I pulled up in front of Diner thinking of coffee and locked myself out with the engine running and the lights on!!!!) the baleing wire really came through------but now I have gone high tech. Take regular house electrical wiring and strip out a few inches of the bare copper wire. Just as good as baleing wire and no rust.
