Ok. I just recieved my new 98 ram, and it was advertised with a factory security system. I don't, however have any remotes for it. It does have the secutiry system relay and fuse installed, so i am confident it is actually there.

My question is, should i have remotes for this vehicle, or does it work some other way. If it does need remotes, what are my options for the remotes and programming them?

Thanks in advance!

on my 01 whenever you lock the door it arms the security system and there is an indicator LED on the overhead console, it takes a minute to fully arm but it works without a remote. You can check yours by locking and closing the doors with one window down, wait a couple minutes then reach in and pull up on the lock button and open the door, the horn should start going off. I looked into replacing a remote and the dealer wanted something like $80 for the remote and another $80 to program it, I said no thanks, I'll use the key.

And... the instructions for programing the remotes is in your owners manual and if you don't have a manual I'm sure there's a fine memeber of this discussion board that can e-mail you some instructions... I've done it on my 01...

I have an owners manual, along with a service manual on the way, so that will solve one problem. Now i just need a remote. I have bought them on ebay before, so i'll start there. Thanks!

OK. I have the owners manual and the service manual. They both talk about a flashing light in the instrument panel that will flash upon arming. I do not seem to have this light. Also, neither book talks about how to program a remote for a 98. I checked under the hood in the fuse block, and i do have the security fuse and relay which according to the service manual flashes the headlights.

I've tried locking the doors with the power lock switch, but no alarm seems to arm.

I notice that the owners manual talks about there being several options, one just being remote entry and the second level being the full alarm system. Is there any way to figure out which i have?

How do you program the remotes? does it require a dealer visit for this model year?

Does the early model 98 have a flashing light for the alarm system being armed?
