Seems like I have run out of gas. Code 628

My turck starts, sputters and stops and is throwing code 628. I have 22k miles so it should be under warranty and the dealer should pay for towing?



I am concerned that the dealer is going to tell me it was bad deisel and try to put it on me.

P0628 Fuel Pump Relay Circuit Low, or Fuel Lift Pump Control Circuit Low. Sounds to me that, technically, your CP3 pump is running out of fuel. Shouldn't be an issue under warranty but keep us informed of the outcome.

Possible fuel trouble

This morning it was -2°F here and the truck had been sitting cold since Friday PM. I did have the block heater plugged in though. I cranked it up, let it idle for a minute and then set the high idle using the cruise control. I got out to scrape the ice off the windshield and the mighty Cummins stumbled then caught again and then died. I cranked it again, it ran for about 10 seconds and died. It did this about 4 times. I went inside, called the dealer and spoke to the service manager. He could shed no light on it and suggested I have Dodge roadside assistance tow it in. Well I went back out to the truck to get the number and thought I would try it again. Lo and behold, it started up and continued to run for about 10 minutes before I decided to just drive it and see what happened. Nothing happened! No codes were set and it made it to work just fine. So, what do you think? A touch of water in the fuel? Intake air too cold? To this date, it has never missed a lick and I have about 19k on the clock. Original fuel filter. No mods.

Mike- sounds like a relay, but if your fuel were bad, and the dealer has the evidince, your recourse would be with the fuel seller.



George- possibly gelled fuel? Sounds typical.

Get that filter changed if you need incentive check out my Readers Rig gallery you will find a photo of a real dirty one that should get you going. It takes a few minutes and a 1 1/8 wrench search these forums there is a couple easy how-to's written up.



My guess on your troubles is gelled fuel from the cold use some fuel aditive especially this time of year.

The dealer said the Lift pump needed to be replaced. It will be covered under warranty.



Also, Dodge will cover the tow, if the work warrantied, but you have to call them to set up the tow. 1-800-521-2779 I called the local tow guy and now have to send in my reciept to get re-imbursed

Seems that the lift pumps are having a problem. 71 pumps are back ordered from Cummins. And by the way, it is covered under warranty. If you had to buy one, they are $345.

Man I'm glad my '05 doesn't have a lift pump. Time will tell, but I sure hope the new pusher pump design is more reliable. Funny thing is, when I took it out to install my fuel tank breather kit, I noticed how wimpy that motor they put in the tank is! I shoulda got a picture. Chances are, it'll still be starving the CP3 once mods are added... we'll see.

i change my fuel filter with every oil change every 3500 or 4000 miles and it is almost black every time i pull it out. and i only fuel up at truck stops. why is it so dirty?

Kinda normal. Do a search its been discussed. Asphalt particles/by products in diesel which is normal.

Thought I would jump back on this post, since I started it. I think the replaced lift pump has gone bad. I did not pay attention to the pump they put in 2005. I guess I have an intank pump. And it seems that it has gone out at 70k miles. I will call the dealer on see what the story is. Last time they did cover a rental car for me. I had to wait a few days while they checked it out. The LP was back ordered 70 pumps. This time I will call the dealer for the tow and it the pump is back ordered, I will demand a rental that day or blow a gasket for anyone who will listen.

Anyone have a suggestion on a backup setup for the LP. Can I install a pump on the frame and pull fuel through the intank pump?

No extended contract but I read here that it is covered to 100k.

I checked under the hood and it seems that the lp is still connected to the fuel filter. I thought the last one they put on might have been moved to the tank. I really do not want it in the tank. Is there a replacement for the LP, that I can install in the stock position, on the fuel filter?

I just ordered back issue 56. They have an article about the perfect fuel transfer solution. Has anyone read it? Can you give me the short version of what is said in the article. I need to know by tuesday and I'm not sure the back issue will get to me by then.



I really think I should spend my own money and replace the pump under the hood, instead of having, Dodge, under warranty, put a new pump in the tank.

I need some feedback on this.

It's covered under the 100,000 mile warranty. The new pumps are in-tank.
The article you refer to suggests not getting the in-tank warranty repair. Since Dodge is not selling the filter mount unit(instead they offer a re-fit to the in-tank kit) The author suggests buying the Airtex #3968188 unit and some Genos hardware to mount it inline. Dodge is on nationwide backorder for the OEM replacement part #3957922. The author suggests checking out Vulcan Performance Home Page

Engine mounted lift pump is covered up to 7/100. The intake unit is only 3/36. Since my truck will ave no more mods then it has I'm going to get a the retro intank pump installed by D. C.
