Every time I pull my rear brakes apart I notice that the Self Adjusting cable has once again come apart from the Star wheel clicker. This time it has eaten my spring that keeps it tight so I need to replace that. But does anyone have any ideas on how to keep this tighter so it doesn't fall apart. I have new drums, shoes, hardware kit and new axle seal since that blew out and made a BIG mess  . Truck seems to stop much better though having those new items on there.

Thanks.

Hey Scott, Shrimpy here.

I have been having the same problem and am stumped as to how to fix it. My passenger side needs fixing now!!!! This same rear end in our first gens was used in f@rds from 73 to 82 I believe. Short of making some sort of alternate holder or something, I have no clue. What gets me is that I will loose one side at a time and in no milage timetable. If you find out let me know.

I noticed on the 93 when I had the drums off that the last guy to do the brakes didn't install the clip from that spring correctly. Basically the end of the spring was hooked on the adjuster bar not with the bar between the spring and the clip on the end of the cable. Clear as mud right???LOL... Well the tab that the spring hooks onto is supposed to be between the spring and the clip. The hook end of the spring is tapered to slid the clip tight against the adjuster and not let go. I had the same problem with the 89 and knew what it was supposed to be like.

Am I on the right track???

I believe that you are on track with that. I have purchased new cables from local auto parts store, Mother Mopar didn't have any. I was working on a dodge van the other night and noticed that is exactly how that one was set up. The Self adjuster goes BETWEEN the spring and the clip which will hold it in place. I have always just placed the clip onto the adjuster. Thanks for your replies and can't wait to fix MY truck.
