I shipped my stock Holset HE351 to Turbo Re-source to have them do a rebuild and re-seal. Has anyone had SUCCESS with any upgrades done to their turbo such as an upgraded turbine or compressor wheel? Mine started passing some oil into the compressor. Tom at Turbo Re-source says they can put in a better thrust bearing. I have a Pacbrake PRXB and apparently, exhaust brakes put extra load on the turbine section. (That's what I was told). My truck is stock internally and I run a Smarty jr usually on the 70hp setting. It is also a 6 speed stick.

My dad had Tom put a larger turbine wheel in it and WOW, it's a great turbo now! It made a huge improvement in spool, reduced cruise boost, egt's, and I am guessing a lot less drive pressure too.

Are we talking about the HE351CW? If so keep us posted. I'd like to know more about this larger turbine wheel. Possibly a part number or specs and what it costs?

Yes the HE351CW.

What we did was have Tom rebuild the HE351CW and then machine the turbine housing to fit the HE351VE turbine wheel. This was a few years back but the cost for the rebuilt/modification was ±$1K.

There are many shops now modifying the stock turbos,Make sure you are very straight up on how you use it/don't go to big

Talked to Tom this AM just as my turbo was arriving via UPS. I am getting a complete rebuild and he is going to fit it with the HE351VE turbine.

MOTORHEAD; Do i remember you had a Garret ball bearing turbo?
John's post sparked a 'i remember' !
I have the Tater Built he351cw turbo which has a 76-64 turbine [exh housing was machined] and a slightly larger then oem compresser. [Oem turbine is 70-58]
A referance was made on drive psi,... i checked before & after and drive psi is lower.
At 3rd gear, 1500 to 2000rpms= 2-6# 'VS' OEM = 7-10#
Wot= 42# 'VS' OEM= 55#

Just some info! :D

3rd gear [48re] just holding steady......
@ 1500 rpms; OEM=7# drive psi & 0# boost // Tater= 2# drive psi & 0# boost
@ 2000 rpms; OEM=10# drive psi & 3# boost // Tater=6# drive psi & 4# boost
@ 2500 rpms; OEM=18# drive psi & 6# boost // Tater=15 drive psi & 14# boost
WOT; OEM=55# drive psi & 32# boost // Tater=42# drive psi & 32# boost
Smarty 90 hp tuning and Touch for gauges except dive psi.
Not perfect testing, but close!

Your 1500 rpms boost seems low, but otherwise looks like a good improvement.

My 1500 rpms on a stock can/turbo with no load (neutral) I was 0 psi boost but only 1 psi of drive. When driving 7 psi of drive would have put me at 5-6 psi of boost with a load.
