How close does the Sentry key chip have to be to the ignition to work?

say if you have one of Tomeyguns' pushbutton starters and the sentry key in your pocket would it still work.

I think a pushbutton starter would be nice but also want to maintain some security. This way the truck won't start with out the key that is in my pocket but the key doesn't need to be used to start it. I would just carry it for the chip and a backup if the pushbutton failed.

I tried taping the sentry key to the steering column and using a standard key w/o the security device made by a locksmith shop. Didn't work. The engine started . . . then died.

I don't know of any way to fool or defeat the sentry key feature.

The MOPAR kit available through Dodge works with the sentry key and it works verrry well. I installed mine myself and if you're reasonabley handy and have a soldering iron you shouldn't have any difficulty.

I don't want to fool or defeat it, I want it to work with the pushbutton starter to keep anyone but me from starting it but I want to keep the key in my pocket.
