When removing the rear drum and hub is it neccesary to replace the locking nut and lock wedge with new? Am fixing the dreaded leaky seals.

TIA

It's not too bad a project to replace the seals, if you have the right size socket to remove the locknut. I spent more time getting the right socket than I did doing the work.

To answer you question. IMO you do not have to replace the locknut, although some members suggest it is required. If I take mine apart again I will replace the locknuts only because the nylon doesn't seem like it will hold up too well after being removed again.

I would definitely have the small push in set "pin" on hand before you do the project. One of mine broke during removal and the other was in rough shape.

If you do a search there was a thread a while back about this topic and it had all the necessary part numbers.

I've been in the OEM business for the last 18 years. The policy is always to REPLACE any locking fastener once removed. This applies to nylock, deformed thread, split nut, and crown nuts. If you open a fastener held by Loctite, it must be cleaned and new liquid applied.

Here's the way I do it at home. If the fastener is obviously ruined on disassembly, I either replace it or use Loctite. If not visibly damaged, I use my fingers to tell me if the locking feature is still working. Many times I still use a shot of Loctite. Nylocks due tend to loose it faster than deformed thread style lockers.

Lock Nut and Socket

Have my rear end apart right now, and doing complete brake, bearing and seal rebuild, front and rear.

- 2-1/2" Socket 1/2" drive with square corners made of thin metal. $13. 50

- LockNuts $20. 00 each

- Being able to stop when finished, Priceless ;)

2 9/16 was the socket I used to take my rear end apart.

This topic was discussed a while back and 2 9/16 was the consensus on the spindle nut size for both the 70 and 80 axles. If 2 1/2 worked that doesn't suprise me with DC.

I bought a spindle nut socket for the Dana axles (From what I understand the Dana spindle nuts are different than some others). It was KD Tools brand and cost about $25 at Napa.
