Can my Dodge handle this?

My 99 does that to. New or old fuel filter does not matter. It runs rough for about a minute and puts out grayish smoke. I have been told it smokes(black) alot when towing.

Let us know what the dealer says
Thanks

My truck was doing the exact same thing you two are describing.
See my stories about what happened.

The final result was the Injection pump was out. Replaced under warrenty in 4 working days. (After a TON of troubleshooting)
The last time I went in to the dealer,, I told the service rep. .

"Just Fix it, I don't care how, Just make it run like it used to"

Well I don't have all the details yet, but the lady there said the tech Re-flashed it. . and they are keeping it over night So they can test it cold again. . I guess we'll see. I'd sure be sweatin if it wasn't under warranty.

Hey guys, my truck has developed a new problem, when I start it cold, it misses an smokes BIG time, runs really bad until it hits 180 degrees, then it runs fine. I do notice more black smoke under load than I used to however. . it's at the dealer today but I just wondered if anyone had any thoughts. I found a thread earlier on over flow valve?

Yep, that's the first thing that needs done for sure, but it seems odd that it runs fine when it's warmed up. But I know dirty filters can do strange things...

Thanks for the info BOMBER_101. My Injection pump was replaced 14k ago because of the same symptoms you describe in your posts, not saying its in good shape now but my problem is just at idle for about a minute. My lift pump pressure at idle before filter is 10-11psi... 7-8 at WOT. The filter was changed 1500 miles ago.
Oh yeah, my APPS(throttle position sensor) was replaced about 6000 miles ago. The truck would not idle below 1800 rpm. Went out one morning to go to work and the idle was 1800, it was fine when I shut it off the night before.
Thanks guys

Well here it is day two. . the Re-flash did not fix the problem. They said the pressure from the lift pump is low (imagine that?), so the five star hotline folks are shipping a new lift pump today. It almost seems like they have to follow these steps, even if it seems clear the injector pump is sick. I don't know. . but I'll let you all know what happens. Any thoughts?

Yes, There are WAY Too much "politics" involved when doing warranty work.

#1. THe Trucks "COMPUTER" Has to say there is a problem, or if not Computer monitered, it Has to Prove to be "out of spec" consistently.

#2 The mechanic has to troubleshoot to make sure that is the problem.

#3 Mechanic has to talk to DC and they give him a long list of things to check, and if enough things are wrong, THEN and ONLY Then will the part get replaced.

If the mechanic does DC's checks and it is "within specs" the dealership gives the truck back to the customer, along with the "No Problem Found" Tag.

yeah, that sounds about right. I'm planning on a lift pump pressure gauge now. . has that problem been corrected? In other words, are the new lift pumps having the same problems? also, has anyones truck run bad simply because the lift pump pressure was low? It doesn't seem like it. . Thanks Merrick, I'm glad I have an idea of what's going on thanks to you...

Well, I got the truck back from the dealer after they replaced the lift pump, and it runs perfect. I noticed the tech wrote on the ticket that there was a 7psi drop across the filter (in reason to replace lift pump). Anyway, she's back on the road!
