Serious Paint Chip Issues!!!

Here's a shot of how my rear quarter panel looked after a few thousand miles, and daily driving down our gravel road:

Does a pretty good job @ $4. 95 a can... Took 4 cans to do my truck - still looks good after 12,000 miles and a year's driving...

Does anyone know what that 3m stuff is? It's other name is HELICOPTER TAPE. The military uses it on the props to keep them from getting sand blasted.



It's pretty serious stuff. This ain't the stuff you find in Autozone..... And it ain't cheap!!!

That Grip & Guard looks pretty good. This is from their site:

It says a textured finish. I'd prefer smooth, though.

JCAREY, Can you tell me the steps you used to apply the rustolium and did you scuff up the paint and how? tks.

Sorry. After reading Gary - KJ6Q's post, I just did a search for the Grip & Guard to find some info. I posted back what I found because I thought it might be interesting to some others.



Gary - KJ6Q would be the best one to answer that, since he used it.

I masked off the area I wanted to paint, used alcohol to degrease, then applied the Rustoleum - I used multiple coats on the lower edges, and feathered to thinner ones up higher to minimize thickness at the parting line.



I too would prefer a smoother finish, since the textured finish is harder to clean when washing the truck - but probably not as much an issue on the darker colors - but then, the Line-X stuff is rough too...



I did a "show and tell" thread on what I did - I'll see if I can provide a pointer in a little bit...

If you try the Line-X route, be it known that it WILL stain! If you live in an area with red dirt, such as Northern Calif, the sides will look as bad as the inside of the Line-x bed on my 98 CTD. I installed the Mopar mud flaps and reduced the chips by 90%

No, the white was a very close match for my truck - out in direct sunlight the color difference is barely visible. The clear would be good for guys not liking any of the other available colors.



I can't provide the pointer I mentioned above showing the steps used in my application - guess I posted that thread over in another board...
