Diesel engines & PU Campers

tire clearance

I was just looking at the Chevy website and noticed that they rate the HD 2500 Silverado with the GAS engine and 3:73 rears capable of towing 14,000 lbs but my 2010 Ram 2500 Diesel with 4:10 rears is only rated to pull 12,600?! I don't get it! Maybe I should trade? I know, not nice.

What do you guys think? I pulled my 5th wheel with my truck without issues. Dry weight is 11,900. I'm sure I'm over GCWR which doesn't take much. Axle weight is fine. No problems pulling. Trans temp stayed around 149 and I pulled at 65 mph like it was nothing. Can the numbers be THAT wrong?

Makes me think this new standard they're coming out with might be a good thing. They won't be able to inflate their numbers anymore.

I've never trusted tow ratings. If you are not exceeding your axle/tire ratings, and it feels comfortable, and your trailer brakes work correctly, I wouldn't worry.
Your dry weight is 11,900 on your fifth wheel, add goodies, and you may be near 13,000. Different trailers feel different and tow differently. As long as you feel safe and aren't exceeding axle/tire ratings, I would still install air bags. Of course, there are some people on this forum that will just tell you to drive that measly 2500 off a cliff and go out and get a "real truck" (dually) because that's what they drive!! In their opinion, a 2500 isn't capable of towing anything more than a pop up trailer, or carrying anything heavier than groceries.
Since I own a "measly 2500" with air bags, I know for a fact I can haul just as well as a similiarly equipped 3500 SRW.
Wait, was I ranting? Yeah, I guess I was. To answer your question, though. . YES the numbers are that wrong!!! NO don't trade in your truck on a Chevy gasser!!

That gas truck might pull that load but it will be slow and MPG will be about 3 to 4. I had a Gasser in an F250 and it pulled just fine, transmission temperatures were always a problem and I couldn't go far without making sure there was a gas station near by. The Dodge 2500 with the v10 in it is rated to pull 14,000 or more also, same issues though, 3 to 4 MPG gets real expensive.

All marketing hype!!! Stick with the best and smile :D

I agree 100% that gas engines do make some awesome power, but a couple gears lower and double or more RPM will ultimately hit the pocket book when compared to overall longevity and quantity of fuel used to give the same results.

Torque is what is overlooked by most "sheeple". er... I meant people that merely look at HP numbers and think that is the only thing that matters and overlook what really matters instead of the facts.

Torque=Towing & Horsepower=Speed

Also, Dodge is looking at liability issues from blood thirsty lawyers that would sue their own mother if they could

Government Motors lies! A Chevy gasoline V8 with a 14,000 lb. fifthwheel on the hitch would be running in second gear at 4000 rpm on the slightest grades. The transmission would be junk in 50k miles and the engine would require overhaul by 100k.

My thoughts exactly. Common sense has never been GM's strong suit.

Should I be thinking of trading for a Silverado HD 3500 duelie diesel? Supposed to be a better puller than even the Ram 3500?

If you like your 2010 Ram but are set on trading, why not look at the uprated Ram 3500 duallies that are coming out in 2Q11 with 30,000 GCWR and up to 22,700 trailer tow rating? See HERE.

The dually will feel even more stable than your current truck, but as far as pulling power being "better", I doubt it. I have several trucks in our fleet that I tow with. A 98. 5 dually, my '06 2500, and an '07 GMC 5500 Duramax/Allison. If I have to tow a heavy trailer, I'll use the GMC because the suspension doesn't budge, but the Duramax diesel just has a weird, wimpy feel to it. And not because of power, either. It's the way it DELIVERS the power. Kind of an odd, disconnected feel, like giving it throttle and nothing really happens. But with the Dodges, the urgency is immediate, especially in the 98. 5 since it has a manual transmission. I still prefer that truck, with it's 260,000 HARD miles, lowest horsepower and torque than any truck we have, all because of the feel.
So, think of that when test driving a Chevy. Unfortunately, no dealer will let you hook up to a heavy trailer for a test drive, so all the new trucks will feel the same. The difference is when you hook 'em up...
I agree with the previous post, suggesting that if you are set on trading up to a bigger truck, consider the 3500 dually... from Dodge (Ram).

Who told you a GM is "a better puller?"

A dually, yes. A GM, no way.

Have you read Steve St. Laurent's report on the new '11. 5 Ram dually with 800 ft. lbs. of torque and a new 30,000 lb. GCWR?

Uncle Harvey,

I read the report Steve wrote. I guess I missed the part about 2011. 5.....

My question is: The word on the street is there is to be a major change in the 2012 model... ... ..... Will the 2011. 5 look the same as the 2010 or will it be like the '12?

From Steve's report:

While I neglected to find out when you will be able to order the new truck I did find out that they will be arriving at dealers in the 2nd quarter of this year.

Barry,

I don't even understand why anyone would be speculating on that. I think it is extremely unlikely that Ram will introduce a revised anything in 2012. Isn't the body and chassis design new in 2010? And now the new ISB6. 7 HO engine with increased GCWR?

I think you've been listening to too many truck stop rumors.
