I have been told that the chirp of the serpentine belt when you turn off the ignition is normal. Do yo think any damage is being done to the belt? I appreciate your inputs.

The famous belt chirp is way more prevelant with the 2 gen trucks.

My 99 did every time, totaly normal .

My 05" has only done it once.

I read your reply SWEXLIN and I have decided I need a spare in the toolbox just in case. Thanks for the info.

Since you plan to pick up a spare, recommend that you try to find a Goodyear Gatorbak belt. . that stopped the belt chirp on the 2nd gens. Autozone handles the Gatorback belt.

Is that what that noise is?

I just picked up a used 03 HO and when you turn off the engine it makes a loud quick noise and then is gone.

Kind of reminds me of the noise when someone turns the starter on when the truck is already running. (old gas model)

Have they updated the belt since then?

my '99 did it every time I shut her down ... .....

my '03 has yet to let out a squal ... ... ... must not be bangin her hard enough :-laf

As I said, my replacement MOPAR belt rarely, if ever, chirps in the over 5000 miles it has been on. The original belt Cummins supplied with the engine (the one that shredded at 5400 miles) chirped very loudly.

Why ?

Having a 6 speed, I don't experience the squeal. I understand from prior threads that it only affects the autos. In short..... why ?. . I assume it has to do with the difference in the amount of mass that is stopping suddenly, but ????

Just curious. .

That is exactly why. Flywheel is much more massive than the torque converter.

In that case the new DMF setup better not squawk at all then. Mine did it when new but I havent heard it for the past 10K miles.

My 91w/auto has done it forever, replaced belt (among other things) at 157,000, now have 287,000 and it still does it. Never have shred a belt.
